Jet Hydraulic Improvements Bring Fewer Difficulties Washington -IUPU- The Fed ral Aviation Agency has re ported a 50 per cent reduction in hydraulic difficulties en countered by jet airliners since last summer. The improvement resulted from a massive FFA-industry drive to cure numerous mal functions that were causing frequent precautionary and emergency landings. One such malfunction led to a fatal accident involving a United Air Lines DC8 at Denver last July 11, killing 17 passengers. The Jet was mak ing an unscheduled landing after losing its hydraulic fluid supply when it swerved off the runway into narked truck. This was the only accident resulting from hydraulic troubles. But a rash of report ed malfunctions, both minor and major, prompted the joint FAA-industry corrective pro gram. This was the cause of the fatal swerve at Denver, occuring when the pilot - lacking brak ing power - attempted to slow down the jet by revers ing his engines. -Stricter inspection and maintenance procedures on the hydraulic systems of all jets. -A special check on all flight crews to make sure they are following prescribed pro cedures for dealing with hy draulic emergencies. -Faster, more frequent and detailed reports by all airlines on every conceivable type of hydraulic malfunction, no matter how minor. Well Drilling Is Planned in Winema Klamath Falls The forest service has called for bids for drilling a well on the proposed site of the Chiloquin ranger station in the new Winema National forest in the Klamath Falls area. The proposed station will occupy a site recently pur chased from the Chiloquin Timber company west of High way 97 opposite the Chiloquin airstrip. Forest service crews are now working on roads and clearing building sites.
