TO w I 9. 4 JMllF- Paris, 1889 America is off to the fair again this l year for the first time since San Francisco and New York held exposi tions 23 years ago. This time fair-goers head for Seattle and its Century 21 Ex position which opens April 21. The Seattle fair, of course, will be all new except for one thing. The wdrld's-fair tradition of entertainment and enlightenment will be the same. Look back at world's fairs of the past, and you'll see just what trail blazers they were in setting standards for better living. The London exposition of 1851 is generally considered the first world's fair. It was held in a "Crystal Palace," a vast building resembling a greenhouse, which skeptics said would shatter in the first storm. But it weathered the worst weather and pioneered a type of glass and steel architecture that typifies our finest cities today. World's-fair architecture always has been striking but not always popular. The Eiffel Tower, built for the Paris Exposition Univer selle in 1889, was considered a "wasteful eccen tricity," and even today some aesthetes refer to it only as "that awful Eiffel tower." To mil lions of others, however, this is one of the most beloved landmarks in the world. Seattle hopes its look into the future of architecture will stand the tests of both time and taste. I suppose the most famous case occurred at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition of 1876 where Alexander Graham Bell showed his telephone, patented only three months before. He was ignored until the Emperor of Brazil experimented with the "gadget" and exclaimed : "My God, it talks!" Bell and his invention be came overnight sensations. The United States established itself as the technological pathfinder of the world at the Paris fair of 1878 with exhibitions of the auto mobile, mechanical icebox, electrical lighting, and Edison's phonograph, which entranced thousands of listeners by squeaking away on "Mary had a little lamb . . ." I wouldn't want to predict what great prod ucts of tomorrow will debut at Seattle, but I'm sure there will be many. At the U. S.
