They have, as does all Af rica, what is known to us as the colored problem and they handle it in their own way. The colored docs not vote and are used strictly for labor. Two Types Colored By the colored here they nave two types: (1) what is caned the Cape colored, which is a race of molatto and high yellow who are decend ants of the early Dutch, Eng lish, German and Boers who co-mingled with the blacks; (2) the blacks who are natives imported from the north for labor purposes. The Europeans, which all whites are referred to and the colored, which all blacks are referred to, are governed under strict segregation laws. Their big headache now is the "Morality Law" which bans all co-mingling of the races. This law means strict ly that white and colored have nothing in common with each other, cannot visit or have any social contacts. They can only speak to each other for busi ness purposes. On our short visit in Cape bie Mountain which rises some 3,500 feet The climate is similar to San Franicisco. This is the time of year just before win ter which we know in Ore gon as the fall and harvest time. In going through the central market we saw all kinds of pears, peaches, apricots, ap ples, plums, corn on the cob, tomatoes and all similar pro duces of the Rogue valley, in cluding gigantic watermelons Tropical Fruit Sale In addition, all types of tropical fruits were on sale, such as pineapples, bananas, papaya, etc. First quality po tatoes which were at least an equal to those grown in the Klamath river Lakcview area. Potatoes were one cent a pound (American), pears one cent each for all varieties, and this included what looked like Bosc and Bartlett. Large red tomatoes, worm free were three cents American. W. flWsnn. dean of the school of engineering, Oregon stale university, Lorvauis, will speak to a joint meeting of the local chapter of the Professional Engineers of Ore gon and the American Insti tute of Electrical Engineers in Medford. Ashland and Klamath Falls. Dean Gleeson will explain the changes in the engineer ing curriculum at OSU to take place this fall. The dinner meeting will be held a Pine's Garden on North Pacific highway beginning at 6 p.m., Monday, according to Farnk Ross, local president of PEO and D. D. Coblcigh, chairman of AIEE. , Linda Wright Gets Science Fellowship Ashland -Linda Wright, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Wright, 159 Alida st., Ash land, has won a National Sci ence Foundation Graduate Fel lowship award, one of 22 stu dents in Oregon to receive this type of graduate grant. Miss Wright, who is a sen ior at Oregon State university majoring in chemistry, ex pects to go into the field of chemical research and this summer will be employed at the IBM plant in San Jose, Calif. She will return to OSU in the fall to begin her fellow ship. The National Science Foun dation award gives the recipi ent $1,350 for a nine-month period, plus tuition and travel allowance. The university re ceives $500 cost-of-cducation allowance. Miss Wright has consistent ly won scholarship recogni tion throughout her high school and university years and is presently on the OSU honor roll with straight A s. She was valedictorian of her class when she graduated from Ashland High school in 1958. She attended Southern Oregon college before enroll ing at OSU. In shopping and looking around the city and in view ing these well-dressed attract ive Cape colored women, some of them beautiful beyond words, I can only say that the law must have been dreamed up and put into ef fect through the jealousy of the so-called European wom en. It seems that each area has its own colored problem, in cluding our country, and from what I have seen so far the best way to handle any prob lem, colored or otherwise, is in its own backyard. For an American to venture his idea on how to whip the colored problem in South Af rica makes about as much sense as a group of Freedom Riders from Oregon trying to straighten out the colored problem in Georgia or Ten nessee. Good Retirement Town This would be a wonderful town for retirement for any one who had $.100 a month or more income. On the Friday evening be fore arriving in Cape Town we had an indescribable thrill at sea just before 7 p.m. when we saw John Glenn whip over the coast of Africa. The fire ball could be seen plainly from the bridge of the ship. Everyone cheered including the Dutchmen and Europeans in the crew. After seeing the astronaut, we went to the captain's cab in to hear more about the flight on the radio. In a short legnth of time Glenn passed over Guaymas, Mexico, the Gulf over the Florida Coast and set down.
