You may devote hours and dollars to its construction and end up with something that takes up yard space but does not give National Safe Boating Program Being Conducted A far - reaching national program of safe boating edu cation is conducted by the American National Red Cross, sponsored by some 2,800 of the 3,700 Red Cross chapters. The program provides instruc tion for adults in inland areas of the country where boating classes conducted by the U.S. Power Squadrons and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary are not available. Classes are taught by volun teer instructors who have been trained by Red Cross and are free, the only re quirement for eligibility be ing the ability to swim. Principles of small craft safety and techniques in boat and canoe handling have been an important part of the American Red Cross Water Safety program since it was first begun in 1914. In the beginning, the use of boat ing equipment in effecting water rescues was heavily stressed. When the first National Aquatic Schools were held by the Red Cross in 1922, instruc tion in the safe use of small craft was included in the cur riculum. Boating and canoe ing were taught in these early schools and as the demand for leaders and instructors continued to increase, the courses in these techniques were lengthened. In 1931 an experimental boat and canoe counselors' school was held. As national interest in recre ational boating continued to grow, the emphasis on small boat safety was expanded in ' the aquatic schools. The cur riculum of the some 30 aqua tic schools conducted each year at strategic sites around the country provides inten sive training of advanced stu dents in swimming, life saving and small craft safety. These trainees return to "their com munities and net at water front directors, life guards, and swimming and small craft instructors. Small Craft Schools were organized on an experimental basis in 1949. A formal na tional program in 1952 with certified courses in boating, canoeing and sailing. These courses are comprised of both theory and .actual practice with equipment - some 40 per cent theory and 60 per cent practice. Outboard motorboating was added to the program when the small craft schools were first organized in 1949. This came about as a result of the rapidly increasing interest in motorboating, and the urgent requests from Red Cross chap ters to include instruction so that they could meet local needs for such safety educa tion. Certificated basic and in structor courses in boating, canoeing, and sailing are now offered on a class basis re quiring 16 hours of instruc tion. Red Cross water safety cer tiiicales were awarded to 1, 877,400 persons in 1960-61. Many additional millions re ceived boating safety infor mation through mass media. More people can enjoy the firepit because they sit in a 360 degree circle around it. Check the number of times you can eat out in a week, and if your family really en joys it. How much of the year would it be used for cooking? Does it merit the space it would take year round? When choosing site for a barbecue, select one conveni ent to the kitchen. If not, is there an outside storage area for equipment? Avoid dead end traps in placement of the barbecue.
