The strength of the Army
is to be still further reduced,
from its last reported total of
1,102,515 men on March 1 to
the 960,000 men requested in
the administration's budget for
the year starting July 1.
A top defense official told
newsmen it would be foolish
to suppose that such a large
reduction could be accom
plished without affecting
America's deployed strength
in Europe, especially when
the Army Is increasing its
commitments at home and in
South Viet Nam and other
parts of Asia.
The permanent build-up
from 870,000 to 060,000 men
in the Army was in support of
a vastly increased commit
ment to maintain eight in
stead of only three ready com
bat divisions within the Unit
ed States.
As a result, the Army-Navy-Air
Force Journal and
Register reported, Defense
Secretary Robert S. McNa
mara and the Joint Chiefs of
Staff are considering a plan
that would slash Army
strength in Europe from 287,.
000 to 241,000 men.
Prior to the Berlin crisis,
Army strength in Europe was
252,000 men.

ROYAL LAOTIAN TROOPS KILLED
Tokyo-WPII-Th. pro-Communist Laotian rebel command
Thursday said guerrilla forces killed, captured or wounded
more than 1,200 royal Laotian army troops in the first three
months of 1962 in "the fight to maintain the cease-fire and
defend liberated areas.
The claim was made in a communique issued by the
Laotian rebel military council and broadcast by the Com.
munist New China news agency.

tinued lower today in further
reaction to a grand jury in
vestigation of the latest steel
price boost.
Steels definitely led the

Steel dropped more than 2
points, followed by Armco,
Jones & Laughlin, Republic
and Lukens, down around a
point apiece.
Chemicals were easier and
motors showed little change.

begin a stay-awake marathon
today in an attempt to raise
$5,000 for the Mercy Home at
nearby North Bend.
Ted Behr, 23, has establish
ed a goal of 206 hours. Al
Stuet.lc, sales manager of lo
cal station KYNG, said this
would break a record held by
Jo Warner set in Pocatello,
Idaho, in 1959, during a
March of Dimes drive. Stuet
zle participated in the Poca
tello marathon.
Behr plans to start his
broadcast from a downtown
store after getting a police
escort to the building. The
sliilion is a daytime station
but when Behr signs off at
night he will continue to
broadcast by means of a loud
speaker which will be hooked
up outside the building, Stuet
zle said.
City officials are scheduled
to appear at the start of the
broadcast.
