Harper threw to Kasko as Roseboro slid into the bag, the ball gets away from Kasko. Kasko, Roseboro and umpire Al Barlick watch it fly. Dodgers won 11-7. Manager Fred Hutchinson of the National league champs plans to lead with southpaw Jim O'Toole in the opener of the three-game series. Alvin Dark of the Giants will count er with Billy Pierce also a left-hander whom the Giants acquired last December from the Chicago White Sox. Although the veteran Pierce was well battered in spring I training, he seemed to be hitting his stride in his last two Cactus loop appearances. Dark said. Pagan Hero ' Jose Pagan was the hero for the Giants Thursday despite two throwing errors from his shortstop position. The wiry Puerto Rican clubbed a three run triple off Bob Buhl of the Milwaukee Braves in the first inning, singled in another run during the third then doubled and tallied in the seventh. It all added up to an 8-4 victory over the Braves and made Jack Sanford a winner his first time out. The big right hander was removed in the eighth inning when he gave up a bases load ed home run to Joe Adcock. Stu Miller took over with none out, retired the side, and held the Braves in check the rest of the way. "I'll start hitting them when the bell rings to start the regular season," the mus cular outfielder explained. Wagner did just that Thurs day, hammering a home run into the lower right field deck to give Los Angeles a 1-0 vic tory over the Chicago White Sox at Comiskey Park In the chilly, Midwest city. It was the Angels' first win of the new American league season and gave them a split of the two-game series with the Sox, each game decided by one run. Warning Issued To Sportsmen Portland-Sportsmen across the country were warned by the Wyoming department of fish and game to use caution when making down payments on hunting trips or accepting checks from an alleged Wyom ing outfitter named Frank Guest, the Oregon game com mission said today. This man also operates using aliases of Francis Gues or Herb Guest. With the use of false cre dentials this man has accepted funds under this pretense for several years. He is known to operate throughout the west ern states including Wyom ing, Utah, Nevada and Cali fornia. Phil Schneider, state game director, said that to his knowledge this man has not operated in Oregon nor have their been any complaints re ceived from Oregon citizens. However, Schneider said, all Oregon hunters contemplat ing or making arrangements for guide and outfitting serv ices should be on the alert for any misrepresentation. Estab lished guides and outfitters will usually provide proof of their status in the form of credentials or other means, Schneider said. HOCKEY NATIONAL LEAGUE Toronto - HIM - The Toronto Maple Leafs are beating the Chicago Black Hawks at their own game-roughhouse hockey -in the Stanley Cup finals. The Maple Leafs opened a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series Thursday night by skat ing to a 3-2 victory over Chi cago, which gained the final round by eliminating the mighty Montreal Canadiens. Pitching Helps Surprise Houston Club to 3rd Win; Giants Victors By FRED DOWN UPI Sports Writer They always said pitching was DO per cent of baseball but the Houston Colt .45s may yet prove it's really 100 per cent of the game. The Colt .45s aren't sup posed to have anything else except pitching but that's all they've needed to become the surprise team of the 1962 major league baseball -.season. And it all comes as no sur prise to General Manager Paul Richards because that's the way he planned it. The Colt .45s made it three in a row Thursday when they beat the Chicago Cubs, 2-0, behind the three-hit pitching of Dean Stone. Their pitching staff has now allowed the grand total of two runs and 17 hits in three games-which means that either Richards and manager Harry Craft have come up with a "sleep er" pitching staff or that somebody bored holes in the Cubs' bats. Stone, who formerly pitched in the majors with the Wash ington Senators, Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals, struck out nine batters and walked two. It was his first big league victory since May 26, 1957, when he shut out Baltimore. Drafted By Colts Stone, who had a 12-8 rec ord for Charleston in the In ternational league last season, was drafted by the Colts last Twins, Angels Halted by Snow St. Paul-Minneapolis -(UPH- The Minnesota Twins, snowed out of their home opener against Los Angeles today, moved Indoors for a workout at the University of Minnesota. Several inches of snow still covered the ball park but offi cials were hopeful of playing Saturday afternoon s game. Twin officials decided Thursday that the six - inch snowfall which hit the area could not be cleared in time to permit the season opener. Bill Robertson, director of stadium operations, said equipment could not be moved onto the outfield to remove the snow because it would tear the turf. He said "we'll just hove to wait and let na ture do most of the job." Rookie Pete Richert tied a big league record by striking out four batters in one inning - he also struck out six straight batters - in the Funstons, Seig To Begin Spring Drill for Beavers Oregon State University Corvallis - Another spring football practice - Tommy Prothro's 8th since taking over here in 1955 - gets un derway Saturday at Oregon State, with a big rebuilding job ahead for the Beavers. Oregon State, experiencing a 5-5 season last fall, lost six starters and 13 of its first 22 players through graduation channels. Of 16 departing let- termen, six were players who had won three awards each, and included such key per formers as Mike Kline, Neil Plumley, Don Kasso, Roger Johnson, Hank Rivera, Mike Dolby, Gene Hilliard and oth ers. It was following a ticker- tape parade up lower Broad way and the official reception at City Hall that the 71-year-old Stengel delivered his de fiant challenge to the Yankees - the club which dropped him in 1960 after he had managed it to 10 pennants in 12 years.
