She has only one chore the baby. e e Cindy G. It seemi to me I spend my life being a slave in my own home. I'm 14 and 1 have two younger brothers and a 4-month-old sister. My Job is the baby, which means getting up at 8 a.m. to cnange her and give her the first bottle, so my mother can eIccd late. Getting up so early, I'm too tired after dinner at night to get my homework done right. And over the week end I'm the official babysitter for the other three. So I get stuck two ways. First, I have to miss parties my friends give. Second, I miss out sit ting for neighbors who'd pay me for the work. Mom aoesn i. It's no use trying to reason with my mother. She says these things are my duty. Well, how about my fun? And my schoolwork? e e Mrs. J. G. Cindy sounds like a lawyer building up a ratp Tt'a not as bad as she says.- In fact, the minute she saw her little sister she said, "Oh, I'll take care of her." Well, that morning job Is tne only house chore I expect of her. I let her off with dishes and dusting. But with three youngsters to take care of, I really need that extra hour of sleep in the morning to get through my day. As for the baby-sitting, she exaggerates. Cindy does get to some of the parties ncr crowd gives, and she's had them at our house, too. But Saturday nights my husband and I want to go out and, with a 14-ycar-old daughter, why should we hire a sitter? Cindy gets a fair allowance and the money side shouldn't even be discussed by her. e The Council! With her pre occupation over an infant and her school-age sons, Mrs. G. may not realize mm net ism has special mothering needs niiw. too. She needs more than flattery of responsibility. She needs time for lightheaded ness. Cindy's teens nave crepi up on you,' Mrs. G. While you make new demands because of them, they make new de mands on you in Cindy's be half. You must pause to lis ten. Cindy isn't much past the age when she needed baby sitters to sit with her. Cer tainly there should be a more gradual transformation from the role of baby to that of sitter. Despite Cindy's ef fusive offer to care for the new baby, Mrs. G. shouldn't hold her to it literally. It was just a way an affectionate, natural way of speaking. Because, however, this Is an intramural Issue in a home nf hnsic goodwill and Eood in tent, an casement should be readily available through a compromise a r r a n g ement. Mrs r. wilt acree that the present deal, with Cindy sim mering in a iow-boii ana me baby getting grudging care, calls for adjusmcnt. How about some such swap as this? A Saturday night out for Cindy when there's somc fiinu special afoot for her, alternate early-rise days (Mom to fill in) so she can slay awike more easily for home work, less baby-tending and more dishwashing. In other words, instead of making Cin dy conform to a rigid pro gram, Mrs. G. might make the program bend a bit around Cindy's Just requests. Help ing Cindy get her homework done properly Is as Important a responsibility of her moth er as is the care of the baby. While we appreciate how hard a 6 a.m. rising Is lor Mrs.. G., we wonder whether she' can sneak In an afternoon j nap (along with the bnby's) on those long, long days. i It would be cheering to I Cindy, too, to receive a small fee for silling, or a chance to1 earn a big one from neigh-1 bors. By variations like these, ' the entire family will bene-j fit. Cindy will wind up a less resentful, more tender baby-1 tender.
