The government has de vised a series of plans to ex plore the moon, including the Ranger, Surveyor and Apollo programs. But, so far, less than a dozen scientists are actually engaged in mapping the moon's geological face. One of them is Dr. Eugene Shoemaker, youthful chief of the astrogeology branch of the U.S. Geological Survey in Menlo Park He's considered one of the nation's leading astrogeologists, or moo n mappers. Shoemaker said our knowl edge of the moon is still based on telescope and radar obser vations. They provide meager information. But with an American spacecraft on the moon, at least 1,000 scientists will be needed to process the information received. Compiling, editing and pro cessing information gained from photographs, s e i s m o graphs and radiation-detecting instruments will be a siz able and possibly confusing task, according to Shoemaker. New Series Planned Later rockets sent to the moon will carry television cameras and more elaborate instruments. This is the Sur veyor scries, planned for 1963. The Ranger and Sur veyor projects will prepare the way for the Apollo pro gram, the national space agency's manned flight to the moon. What about that man? What will his job-be when he gets there? How long will he stay? Shoemaker said the man-on-the-moon's main job will be to correct what the earth bound astrogeologists thought they knew. But he won't be able to do much exploring because he will be there for only a few hours. Even when manned flights to the moon become routine, the major part of the exploratory missions there will be carried out by remote controlled vehicles, rather than by men. Aside from the obvious fact that landing a man on the moon will help immensely in the study of outer space, the planets, radiation belts and other astronomical mysteries, Shoemaker said scientists will be able to find out more about the earth too, such as how mountains came to be. Shoemaker believes a new breed of scientist will develop from the moon effort. He said the most exciting and perhaps most fruitful discoveries to be made on the moon may be the least expected. "I did it because I was mad at my wife," said Huffman, according to police chief Ray Buchignani. The admission came after the 35-year-old San Anselmo man took a lie detec tor test. Fire raged through the Huffman home March 24 and Huffman's daughter, Donita, fearful for the life of her cat, dashed into the flames to res cue him. Huffman raced after her, re ceiving severe burns on his face, arms and hands in a futile effort to save her. The cat was found outside alive, but so severely burned it had to be destroyed.
