Eaele Point, Antelope 4-H club mem ber, won championship show manship honors with a near lawless performance at the 1961 spring dairy show spon sored by Rogue River Jersey Cattle club. More than 100 club mem bers competed in the show Saturday at the county fair groundq. Karen Jossy, 16, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Earle Jossy, Eagle Point, was chosen prin cess by the cattle club and will be a candidate for state queen in September in Salem. Three Josephine county 4-H'ers swept top honors in the dairy judging contest, with 101 competing. Cheryl Bassett, Jerome Prairie, was high with a perfect score; De loris Nichols, also Jerome Prairie, second with 294: Alice Kuitert, Applegate, third, 282. Best Dairy Demonstration Bob and Georgia Hubbard, brother and sister team from Antelope club, won the best dairy demonstration by show ing (IUW W . w Second place went to the Reese Creek Renegades. Couple Dies on Shortcut Route Front Royal, Va.-IUPD - A well-beaten path on the out skirts of this Shenandoah val ley town leads to a railroad trestle spaning Gooney creek. The path has been beaten by people who have long re-' garded It easier to walk the 60-foot trestle than to scale a 25 foot embankment and wade across the creek. . Robert Pomeroy, 21, and Mildred Williams, 18, held hands Wednesday while walk ing along the trestle toward a picnic spot. Two friends, Lee and Barbara Thompson were several feet behind them. Whistle Sounds A train whistle sounded. A 67-car Norflok & Western freight train roared around the bend. The Thompsons were able to jump to safety. Pomeroy and Miss Williams had walked too far to turn back. - The couple ran, still hold ing hands. Once, the girl falt ered and Pomeroy slowed to help her. The train brakes screeched, but too late. They were struck and killed instantly about five feet from the end of the trestle. Mechanical Rabbit Gets Best of Buster Hunckley, England (UPI) Buster, the fastest stray dog in England, continued to steer clear of civilization today as the result of his collision with a mechanical rabbit. Buster, a racing greyhound, bolted from the track after he hit the hare. He has eluded his pursuers for three weeks be cause he is too fast. OREGON f Tax Collections Drop $9 Million Salem - (UPC - State tax col lections at the end of April totaled $89.7 million, lag of $9 million behind last year, the State Tax commission said today. ' Most of the drop is In per sonal Income tax collections, which fell from $80 million in the first 10 months of fiscal year 19S9-60 to $72 million for the same period ending this April.
