Caretakeri at F o r 1 1 1 Park xoo found a man giv ing the elephant a bucket of beer Sunday, The man was taken to jail and charg ed with malicioui miichiei. Lawrence Curlii, direc tor of the zoo, laid he did n't know if the beer would have any effect on Queen Tut, but he had handlers give her several gallon! of black coffee just to be safe. "It's pretty hard to de termine if it made her drunk." Curtis said. "Did you ever try to make an elephant walk a straight line?" BEN-GURION DUE Jerusalem, Israel (UPD - Premier David Ben-Gurion ar rives in Ottawa' Wednesday for a visit to North America that is expected to include a meeting with President Kennedy. Strictly Personal By Sidney J. Harris (c) General Features Corp. DRIVING CAN BE HAZARDOUS In his entertaining and in structive book, "The Racing Driver," Denis Jenkinson tells about a gruel ing Italian race in which he rode as the navigator for Stirling Moss, the great Brit i s h driving ace. At one point, moving well over 150 miles an hour, the car went into a nasty skid that could have been fatal. Moss didn't turn a hair and quickly had the car back under control. ' That evening, after the race, Jenkinson knocked over a bedtable and lamp while getting into bed. Moss, who was asleep in the adjoining bed, jumped up, his face HarrU Gratifying Assurance CONFIDENCE Our understanding counsel and quiet competence are a source of deep comfort to the fam ily, who can leave every detail of the funeral service to us with full confidence. &) service if p NOT BY jf COLO SV BUT BY PERL FUNERAL HOME CORNER SIXTH AND OAKDALE Spacious Parking Lot MEMBER BY INVITATION . rz wvctr or vmiu vpauicn vxmx. white with fear, and out, "What is that?" cried The point Jenkinson was making is that nobody is fear less about everything. Even daredevil racing drivers may be frightened by sudden nois es in the night, just as fero cious football players may faint at the sight of a hypo dermic needle about to be plunged into their arms. There are only two things we fear - the unknown and the unexpected. Moss is un afraid on the race course, not only because he has a cour ageous and disciplined person ality, but. also because he knows every inch of the course and how to anticipate disaster behind the wheel, Courage is a moral virtue, but it is linked with the intel lectual virtue of prudence. As Aristotle points out, courage is the means between coward ice and rashness. If Moss did not know the course, and was not able to anticipate misfor tune, he would be a fool rath er than a brave man to drive as fast as he does. Young people, especially, do not understand that cour age must be allied with knowl edge. Ignorance makes some people too fearful and others too rash. No racing driver can be a coward, but none can af ford to be rash either. As the saying goes, "There are old drivers and there are bold drivers, but there are no old, bold drivers." On the open highway, the average motorist is continu ally confronted by the un known and the unexpected. He has none of the protection given to the racing driver with helmet, roll-bar and fireproof bulkhead that seals off the engine from the cock pit. And he is at the mercy of many terrible drivers all around him. ' Not to be fearful, not to be cautious, not to drive with the utmost tact on the open highway is a sign of ignor ance, not on bravery. The racing driver feels infinitely safer on the track, because he can, in a large measure, con trol his own fate. It would amaze you to learn how many such motoring heroes don't even own personal cars, out of sheer fear of drivers like you and me. Newest Slip Covers II In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS Among the problems of for eign travel is foreign money. It tends to throw the average traveling American for a loss. Traveling Europeans have less trouble along that line. West ern European countries are rather small by our standards not a great deal larger than our states. Western Europeans who travel at all are quite ac customed to crossing interna tional boundaries and every time they cross an interna tional boundary they encoun ter a new set of monetary units. So they soon get used to handling different kinds of money. With Americans, it is differ ent. Many of us go through a whole lifetime without ever dealing with money units oth er than dollars and cents. handful of English money and ask him to pick out what he needs for his fare. TPHIS may go on for several days, but in the end you are going to have a serious session with yourself, putting it something like this: See here. Bud, you're a SAP. If your cronies in the Kiwanis club, or the Rotary, or the Lions, got hold of the fact that you've been batting your way over Europe, acting liKe Lady Bountiful and leav ing it up to everybody you do business with during the day to name his own price and do the right thing by you, a TO TAL STRANGER, you'll nev er hear the last of it." IT ISN'T that the monetary systems of Western Europe, where presently Americans are doing the bulk of their foreign travel, are so much more complicated than ours. With the exception of English money, they aren't. The trouble is that the mon ey of other countries LOOKS different. Not until they start wrestling with foreign cur rencies do people realize how instinctive is their recognition of their own money units. You look at a dollar bill and with out even thinking about it you know how much change you should get back if you buy something priced at less than a dollar. And so it goes all along the line. If you buy something for $3.87 and ten der a five dollar bill in pay ment, you know without stop ping to figure it out that you should get back si. 13. TT WILL be quite different when you land in London only a few hours after leaving the U.S.A. Even if you've been foresighted enough to buy a few English pounds before leaving Washington or New York, you will be stumped for the moment when the cab man tells you your taxi bill is eight shillings and six. You will probably end up-even if on the way over you have boned up on the fact that there are 20 shillings in pound and 12 pence in shilling - by handing him pound note and accepting what he gives you in change with the pious hope that all will turn out for the best. Or . . . and in this practice you wilKbe joined by many of your fellow Americans . you will simply thrust out a CHANDLER IMPROVLNG Culver City, Calif. - (UPD - Actor Jeff Chandler wa re ported "slightly Improved" but still on the critical list today. A bulletin Issued by Culver City hospital said Chandler has been able to eat and has been "awake and conversing." xuu'LL sit down in a chair and lay out on th bed in front of you all the notes and coins of the currency of the country in which you hap pen to be at the moment, and above them you'll lay out an exhibit of American money, including a $10 bill, a $5 bill, a dollar bill, a half dollar, a quarter, a dime a nickel and a penny and start in teaching yourself how much each for eign bill (they normally call the paper money NOTES) is worth in terms of American bills and coins. If you don't go through that routine, you'll find yourself wasting your money with both hands - either that or you 11 convict yourself in the eyes of every foreigner with whom you do business - from buying a pack of cigarettes to paying your hotel bill - of being a dumb bunny. TJETTER yet, If you're plan- " ning a trip overseas, you should make a reasonably careful study of the currencies of the countries you are plan ning to visit. Another wise trick is before you leave one country for another to buy a small amount of the money of the country you are planning to visit - at least enough to pay your taxi fare to your hotel and buy your breakfast the next morn ing.
