Linda Lampman of the Portland Water Ski club is thrown from the back of a water skiing elephant on the Willamette river in Portland. The elephant Is with Polack Bros. (UPI Telephoto) f Plotters' Freedom Alarms Liz Taylor Las Vegas (UPD Elizabeth Taylor and her singer-hus band, Eddie Fisher, said, to day they are amazed that three men who plotted to kid' nap the actress' children are still free. Miss Taylor said she had been assured by authorities that the youngsters are in no danger. She was disgruntled .despite assurances. "But how can the public be asure that 'their children are safe while these kind of peo ple are still at large?" she asked. "If they would hatch a plot like this once, what is to keep them from doing it again a year from now or even lo morrow?" The' 2-year-old kidnap plot came to light Saturday when one of the conspirators came forth and confessed his part in the scheme. Sheriff Ralph Lamb said three Czechoslo vakian waiters were involved. The complete net was about six feet long, about that wide and covered the entire horse or at least that part of him that the tall could' n t reach. Horses without nets often became so frantic when sev erely bitten b y horse flies that many of them ran away, Hanging up in the barn, the fly net" looked like a- tangle of leather ribbons. The "fly nets ' have about disappeared but the horsefly, the creature that bites the horse, is still with us, and she, for only the female bites,' is usually the fly that will sting you some time this summer. It's logical to assume that back In the horse and buggy days there were ill-informed Individuals who claimed the horsefly, would become less numerous with fewer horses on which to feed. But such was not the true fact, for the horsefly would jus: as soon bite a deer, cow, a man or any animal as it would a horse. Actually, the horsefly barely noticed the shortage of horses; it just transferred Its attentions other warm-blooded creatures. The horsefly, about five or six times as large as a regu lar nousefly, is even more stu pid than the smaller version for the dumb jerk will as read- ily chase a motorcar, a truck, or take off after a train as it will a deer or a horse. Seems that the stupid fly is attract ed by the size, anything that iooks big and is In motion will be pursued. . ine norseiiy is nearly an inch in length, being about the largest of the true flies. They are very active creatures and fast on the wine.. Old Dobin is not so common nowadays, but the fly that pestered him and was named for him is still with us and in plentiful numbers. Six different clubs attended and they each called roll. Af ter tne meeting, skits were put on by each club. ; The hall was decorated by a committee consisting of our junior leaders Collen Franek, Mary Daniels and Carolee Kuest. Hayburn.rs The monthly meeting of the Westslde 4-H Hayburners was neid May 13 at the home of Arlene Carter. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Linda uiDson. ana minutes were read and an overnight ride was discussed. It was decided that the club would have an overnight ride by trail into the Oregon Caves. The club prefair also was discussed. The date will be June 25, at the Sports Fair arena. Ribbons will be given up to fifth place in various games and classes and all 4-H horse clubs are invited. The meeting was adjourned and refreshments were served. Yuri Gagarin ar rived in Sofia, Bulgaria, today for a visit, according to the official news agency Tass. ; Tass said that the diminu tive Russian air force officer, who orbited the earth iq the space ship Vostok April 12, went to Sofia at the invitation of. the Central committee of the Bulgarian Communist par ty and other government or ganizations. ! Three Russians Believed To Be Victims of Space Flight Attempts Chicago (UPD Three Soviet cosmonauts either burned up in their capsules or were hor ribly crippled by space flights months before Yuri Gagarin's successful orbit, a missile en gineer and student ' of Rus sian space technology has said. Robert G. Brown, chairman of the National Telemetering conference, said a fourth So viet cosmonaut "probably" went into orbit about four days before Gagarin, .but "there seems to be some dis pute as to whether there was a space shot at that time." Fifth Flight - "Gagarin's flight represents the fifth Russian into space," Brown told a news conference Sunday before opening the three-day conference of five major technical societies. The groups are the Amer ican Rocket Society, American Institute of Electrical Engi neers, Institute of the Aero space Sciences, the Institute of Radio Engineers and the In strument Society of America.
