SOC To Honor Off: Campus Teachers' : Ashland - Teachers and ad ministrators of off campus schools who cooperate with the Southern Oregon college teacher training program, will be honored guests of the col lege at a dinner in the college Commons May 20 at 6:30 p.m., Dr. William T. Ward, director of laboratory experiences, has announced. According to Dr. Ward, the welcome address will be given by Dr. Elmo N. The foreign tourist does not care to hear how large a build ing Is or how much it cost, the way an American traveler does, either. ' What the Frenchmen, Ital ian, German, Dane or other European Is interested in are supermarkets, housing devel opments, schools, hospitals and how people live, work and play. Church Stops Eliminated "The route is especially for foreign tourists," Engelhardt said in an interview. "We have eliminated most of the church stops. Europeans say they have churches that make ours look sick. They are older and prettier, they say. i "We have cut out some of the history of New York and the United States. The for eign tourists are not interested in that. We are showing more of the city to these people - more of the harbor, docks and ships, and supermarkets and housing developments. "There I a lot more Infor mation on schools, hospitals, teachers, doctors and nurses, These are the Americans the Europeans are Interested in. "Costs are being left out, Americans must know how much everything cost, but the Europeans only think its brag ging to mention such things." If it is successful In New York, the tour will be copied In other U.S. cities. Engelhardt said he ran into these stumbling blocks to luring large numbers of European! across the Atlantic to visit the U.S.A.: ' . -The chief difficulty Is a matter of education - explain ing to the European that he does not have to be a million aire to travel or live In Amer ica. He can live as cheaply or as expensively as he wants to. The Europeans think hotels and food are too costly in the U.S. They must be informed about the less expensive places. -Along with education is the problem of the high cost of travel between Europe and America. The airlines are aware of this and are trying to do something about it. They are increasingly disturbed by the tact that at. the height of the tourist season, planes fly to Europe loaded and return across the Atlantic almost empty. -A third difficulty is the question of what the United States government is going to do to reduce the red tape In volved in gaining entry to the country. Quisled on Speech He was questioned about a speech he made last year at Linfield college in which he had been charged with attack ing the free enterprise sys tem. Sweetland said the state ment on the speech left out his preface which said, "That in every part of the world, the enemies of freedom are asking these questions:" The trial is expected to con tinue into next week. Winston Churchill Said Recovering London (UPD Sir Winston Churchill was reported recov ering quickly today from a slight indisposition which forced him to cancel an ap pointment with the president of Tunisia Thursday. , Lord Moran, physician to the 86-year-old former prime minister, visited Churchill this morning and said after ward he was ''very much bet ter." '. .... Because of his age and past medical history of many ma jor illnesses, Sir Winston re quires careful observation at the slightest symptoms. Witnesses Attend Circuit Assembly A 200-member delegation of Jehovah's Witnesses from Medford and Central Point congregations are in Yreka, Calif., for the "Walk in the Name of Jehovah Forever" circuit assembly. About 800 members of the religious organization are at tending from 17 congregations in southern Oregon and north ern California. ' George Smyth, presiding minister of the Central Point congregation, said that for the past several weeks members in Yreka have been preparing for the assembly. E. C. Kennedy,- traveling minister for the Watchtower society New York, will speak at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 21, on "The Twentieth Century in Bible Prophecy." He will also keynote the meeting with an address tonight. L. A. Mahan, from World headquarters, Brooklyn, will conduct a service meeting on the ' importance of personal and family Bible study. Navy Claims Speed Mark for Helicopters Washington -ttlPa- The Navy has claimed a new world speed record for helicopters -192.9 miles an hour. The fastest sped previously reached was 166.5 miles an hour, achieved by a Russian helicopter on Nov. 21, 1959.
