Based on the best times among Southern Oregon con ference athletes this season, at least three marks could tumble Saturday when the District 6 A-l track meet is held at Ashland High school. The meet will have pre liminaries starting at 10 a.m. and finals beginning at 2:30 R.m; Ashland, Crater, Klam ath Union, Grants Pass and Medford will contend. . Standards most threatened re; those for tne 4u-yara dash, the 860-yard relay and the half-mile. Medford's Bob Mclntyre last week toured the quarter-mile In :49.2. District record is :4S.6. The same afternoon the Tornado relay crew of Mclntyre, Mike Hood, Kent Blew and Phil Humph' reys ran in 1:29.5, which Is A.f seevnus ihbici umn w,w record of 1:31.2. Both Medford times are fastest reported in the state, In the half-mile Ken Mar shall, Grants Pass, and Bob Rix, Medford, finished one- two in a race last week in tne respective times of 2:00.5 and 2:00.7. The standard is 2:01. Voris Equals : One other district mark has been equalled by Ashland's Bob Voris with :19.6 in the low hurdles. Close battles for first and second spots and state meet berths seem likely in most of the events. In some contests there are strong favorites, al though not one of the par ticipants is Immune to upset. ' Medford's HI Martin looks to be the favorite in the mile with the Tornadoes' Tom Bortls top contender In the shot put. Allen Phillips, Klam ath Falls, should take the javelin. The Medford relay crew has by three seconds the best performance in . that event. Mclntyre's 440 time is by .7 of a second tops but the Medfordite could be chal lenged by Grants Pass's Al Staley. ' In the pole vault Dave Ricks and Jay Hughes of Grants Pass have the best marks at 12 feet 3 inches, but rivalry could be nip and tuck in the event. Ashland's Dave Col well has gone one-half inch over 12 feet. Last Saturday Medford's Bill Charley tied with Grants Pass's Dan Mcln tlre for tops in a dual meet at 11-9 as both beat Hughes and Ricks. Mclntire has spent most of the school year recuperat ing from a knee Injury, Hurdles Contenders In the high hurdles Bob Voris of Ashland, Hood and Walt Ayres of Medford, Ron Cowin of Grants Pass and John Champ of Crater are top contestants. In the lows its among Voris, Gil Smith of Grants Pass, Hood and An drews of Medford and Champ. In the 100-yard dash Gary Wald and Jereal Brown of Crater, Humphreys and Mc lntyre of Medford have the best times and challengers In clude Charles Rlchey of Klam ath Falls and Ray Meek and Fred Higgenbotham of Grants Pass. Rlchey, Wald and Hum phreys are top 220 rimers. Wald is a contender as are Meek and Mike Pllklngton of CP. ----- Dennis Alertis of GP and Bill . Dahlstrom and Dennis Brumback are among top run ners in the mile. Rix can't be counted out in the 440 nor can Ron Calkins of Medford in the half. Grants Pass looms as the chief relay challenger to Medford. Les Husted of Klamath, and Dave Molloy of Crater, are among the leading shot put ters. -, ' The discus could prove a real battle. Mike Curtis of Grants . Pass has the best throw in the district but has lost to Medford's Wayne Cowan. Crater's Bill Kropp has outdone Cowan s best in a losing . cause to Curtis'i top heave. .. ' Dwight James of Crater and Clyde Murray and Bob Shepard of GP may battle it out in the high jump. Hood and Scott Eaton of Medford, Tom Hathaway of GP and Voris head the field in the broad jump. Grants Pass is defending champ and will be challenged mainly - by Medford for the team crown. In addition to first and sec ond placers in each event, trackmen who meet minimum standards can qualify for the state meet. Gomez turned in a 226-2 throw to break the Oregon freshman javelin rec- Red Raiders To Vie at La Grande . Ashland - Southern Ore gon's Red Raiders, rated a sec ond place finisher behind strong and powerful Portland State,- left Thursday for La Grande and the annual Ore gon Collegiate confer ence track and field championships. Also departing for La Grande with the Raider track- sters was Al Aklns' SOC golf squad which will enter OCC competition on Saturday on the Eastern Oregon college campus. Raider track coach Dan Bulkley figures the Raiders to show up strong in the sprints and hurdles events, with the power-packed PSC Vikings grabbing off most of the other events, i "We're as ready as we'll ever be, with the exception of Bannister (Ora) and Hart man (Howard)," said Bulkley as he left with his 25-man squad. Bannister, a sophomore quarter-miler from Paisley, Ore., suffered a pulled leg muscle in practice last Tues day. Hartman, the Raiders' top hurdler and holder of the school record in the 180-yard highs with a 25-seconds flat clocking, has been troubled by a sore foot this past week. "We hope that both will be ready by Saturday," comment ed Bulkley prior to the trip. Southern Oregon's hopes in the sprints rest with the fleet trio of, Doyle Bransom, Kerm Bennett and Pat 'Conley. All three were clocked with 10 seconds flat centuries or bet ter in last Friday's 103-28 win over Oregon Tech. Bransom hit the tape in :09.8, Bennett was a close second in 0.9 and Conley was timed in 10 flat. Bowman lined a bases-load ed single in the eighth inning the first extra frame of the opener - for the 3-2 decision. Rhodes drove in the win- ning run in the ninth inning of the nightcap with a blooper single to right that scored manny Mota from second, Frank Torree of the Moun- ties had a two-run homer in the opener. Bob King, who tossed the four hitter for Ashland, Rifle Shooters Practice Sunday A high-power rifle practice shoot is slated Sunday at the White City rifle range. Participants will be from among the membership of the Southern Oregon Center Fire Rifle league which represents the five rifle clubs in this area.
