' . ? For years the driveaways were known as the "meal tick et" for vacationers who liked to take cross-country jaunts and get free transportation. But now the firms are having run of hard luck. Oregon Said To Have Milk Surplus Corvallis-DPD-Oregon State "University economist Stephen Marks says there is an appar ent milk surplus in Oregon because of importations from Washington and Idaho. . He said milk production in Oregon is down and the num ber of . cows has decreased. But production per cow has increased. ', m. The recent price drop stem med from a surplus resulting from imports. Look for Upturn ' "Most of our business is in used cars and it's slow at the present time," Dick Newton of AAA Nationwide Drive away said. The used car business has been slowly drying up too, however. The reason is that Detroit used-car prices grad ually are being equalized with those in far-away points. Difference Now Li Howard Hollembeak, own er of the Detroit Drive-Away Service, said used cars on the west coast used to cost about $400 more than in Detroit. "But now the difference is only about $140 or $150," Hollembeak said. "Some deal ers feel this is not 'enough to warrant the risk." Ray Orleman, of All-State Auto Drlve-A-Way Co., said "The trouble is, the car com panies now have assembly plants all over the country. Detroit isn't the automobile center of the world anymore."
