H. - He'i just no good; we must forget about him. Mrs. L. H. - We have four children. Our two daughters married well, one to a doctor, the other to a lawyer. One son is a brilliant accountant. It's the other boy who's been giving us a lot of trouble. He left school at 19, saying he had no idea what he want ed to be so there was no use staying in college, instead, ne stayed home and there were terrible arguments. Some times the neighbors came, and once even the police. But we patched things up each time. Then, after a terrible blow up, he packed and left. We didn't hear from him for a year. Now we've learned he's broke and in trouble. I want to take him back and help him. My husband refuses, ' Mr. L. H. - The boy Is Just no good. My wife says he left school because he didn't know what he wanted to be. He did know. He wanted to be a bum. -How much torture are par ents supposed to take? The neighbors can tell you the abuse he gave us - hanging around, playing the radio and TV all night, sending home packages C.O.D. for himself. Now he want us to go ball for him because he got caught trying to use a credit card he swiped from locker room. I say let's pretend we just had three kids. This one is headed for ruin anyway. But he's counting on my wife's soft heart. The Council: As someone has put it, 'There's only one thing softer than a mother's heart, and that's her head!" which is what Mr. H. is afraid of, and his errant ton is counting on, it appears. - Pretending this boy was never born, as Mr. H. sug gests, is impossible. TcHlng him back out of pure senti ment, as Mr. H. asks, post pones a real solution to the problem. The entire family has a fin ger in this bitter fruit pie. In aU probability this broth er's anguish, while growing up among sibling "hot spots was ignored. He got used to being the one nobody asked about, talked about, bragged about. Somewhere along the line he typecast himself as the misfit, the oddball. And ever since he's been filling the role. As for now, the father Is justified In not wanting him to live at home. He'd be a dis ruptive force there. Now that he's in trouble, the best course would be for the H's to con tact the authorities and let them know they are parents standing by, eager to take two steps to help their son for every step he takes to help Himself. This aid can be aim- m e n t e d by rehabilitation workers. With living quarters and a Job arranged for, the son can visit hit parents occasionally. A new relationship, based upon affection and respect, could be slowly built up to replace the old hysterics. Aft er the boy has proven him self capable of standing alone, he can be invited to return to the family hearth with status and dignity. His is a costly and round about, way of gaining recog nition. Perhaps, in his early life, perceptive adults and siblings could have eased the struggle. Meanwhile, Mama's soft heart can't be allowed free play. It must wait, encased In some steely common tense. Bonus Sought for Gold Producers Salt Lake City - (UPD - The governors of 12 Western states Wednesday asked that an incentive or bonus pay ment be paid to domestic pro ducers of gold. The governors also came out in opposition to any change In the law requiring 23 per cent gold backing for currency Issued by federal re serve banks until further studies are made. ' . j A resolution passed unani mously said the bonus pay ments were necessary for fair economic return to pro ducers. It said such payments would not interfere with in ternational monetary policy. Gov. William Egan of Alas ka said such payments would reopen closed gold mines and directly employ upwards of 60,000 men and indirectly support another 480,000 Jobs.
