In spacecraft tests, the 4,000-mile-an-hour speed at an altitude of 40 '. miles is reduced by retro-rock- I' eta to the prow of the cap ' sule. As the capsule plunges to 21,000 feet, a stabilizing para chute pops out, and at 10,000 feet a big canopy chute blos- : noma., to, lower, the capsule, f gently to earth or into the sea, "At present comparatively . little recovery is accom- J plished, though," Kagan said ' "Our military and space proj- ' ects are losing several million dollars worth of valuable en ' fines, casings and instruments each year that could be Used ' over and over again, we and other companies are working with government scientists to design parachutes that can halt a lot of this loss." - Pioneer has another big project ' a parachute that somewhat resembles a huge revolving helicopter rotor in the air. It's called the vortex ring parachute and it works in the air much as a boat pro peller works in . the water when it is thrown in reverse. It is said to give 40 per cent more decelerating effect with 60 per cent less cloth area. In stead of being solid, it has four blade-like gores. "It is the most radical change in parachutes in years," Kagan said. "Among other things, makes possible landings pin-point accuracy undreamed of in the past, he said. Final Tasting The parachute is undergo ing final testing at Edwards Air Force Base in California. Although most of Pioneer business is with military and space agencies, the company still makes a lot of parachutes for private and commercial fliers. 'We still are working perfect a chute that will land disabled small plane intact with its crew from altitudes as low as 1,000 feet," Kagan said. "Some crazy kids out on the West Coast have been buying surplus military parachutes and experimenting with cut ting out sections of them to make the Jumps more 'sporty.' Eichmann Accuser Fails To Identify Man in Courtroom Jerusalem (UPD A ' Jewish witness testified today that Adolf Eichmann personally selected thousands of Jews for extermination.' ' ' But the witness, Viteslav Diamanti 40, failed to identify the man in the glassed-in dock of the Jerusalem court as the Nazi secret police . officer whose word sent Jews to their deaths. When Eichmann's W e s German defense, lawyer, Dr, Robert Servatius, challenged the testimony with the asser tion that Eichmann was in Hungary when he was sup posed to have made the selec tion in the Theresienstadt ghetto, the witness said, 'Well, I was just told it was Eichmann." Evidence Received ' Earlier today, the court re ceived documentary evidence which the Israeli prosecution asserted - proved that Eich mann sent at least 16 Jews to the gallows in the Theresien stadt ghetto for trying to escape or smuggle letters into and out of the camp. - Diamant testified that he was one of 24,000 Jews in the Theresienstadt camp called before a Nazi selection board in September, 1944. Each Jew had to pass before a group of SS officers, he said. Those whose names were marked with a X were sent to the death camp at Auschwitz. The others had a P marked against their names and were saved.
