PEARSON - Salem - IUPD - It you like fairy tale about government reorganization, you could say the dragon slew the knight in shining armor. But it depends on who is spinning the tale, All 20 of Gov. Mark Hat field's original cabinet system bills were killed. . V Stocks Move in Broad Advance . New York - IUPD - Stocks moved into a fairly broad ad vance today. Heavy industrial Issues, In - eluding steels, motors and coppers-were in strong demand while gains of a point or more peppered most other sections on the list. U. : S. Steel tacked on around 2, Anaconda 2, Chrys ler and Ford a point or more, General Electric nearly 1 and Goodrich more than 2. Texas Instruments paced the electronics with a rise of around 3 while IBM added 2, Standard Kollsmaa over 1, and Magnavox lto. Among the weaker items, Avnet slipped more than a point, Hershey sagged around 3, Norwich Pharmacal a point and Coty International near ly 1V4, He proposed a shining knight - reducing Oregon's bulky mass of boards and commissions to seven stream lined departments. The dragon that killed this was the Legis lature, in the executive view. The legislative ; version in the months to come will be different. Many contend reor ganization failed because of the fire-breathing between Hatfield, Secretary of State Howell Appling Jr. and State Treasurer Howard C. Belton, especially the Hatfield-Appling positions. . Appling and Belton were publicly opposed to Hatfield's plan to eliminate the Board of Control. Significantly, they declined to endorse any phase Of reorganization. Lawmakers admit that pres sures from those affected by changes were heavy. At every turn there was resistance. Still others said they didn't want to put as much authority in a governor's hands as the plan would have done. It would have created depart ments of commerce, labor, so cial services, public safety, natural resources, transportation-utilities' and revenue. Reapportionment, or lack of It, barqd many a fang and al though the solons christened a plan, Its course is toward the State Supreme court. The re shuffling of legislative seats, forced by the 1960 census, has barely a shuffle in it. Western Oregon Democrats Johnson Hears 'Respectable Opinion' Of Trouble Inside Communist China Hong Kong -4UPK- Authori tative sources said today Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, who is on an Asian tour, has heard "respectable opinion that Communist China If in serious domestic trouble. The sources said that John son has been given the opinion that the Red Chinese army might revolt because of un rest and malnutrition result ing from crop failures and poor management by the Com munist Chinese government, The opinion was that the situation Is so serious the gov ernment might be overthrown in 12 to 18 months. Hornbrook Man Back From Reunion " Hornbrook - Loren Cum, ' mins, Hornbrook. returned last week from San Francisco where he attended a reunion of former army friends of the 85th field hospital unit. Of the 200 members of the group, all but eight now live In the eastern part of the country, and of the eight, six were present. The SSth field hospital unit sailed from Los Angeles to the China-Burma-India theater of World War II and was at tached to the company build ing the Burma road. E, Brewer, 44, was found. Also aboard the white and red craft were Brewer's fa ther, 80, and Frank Cowan, 16, Portland. The plane disappeared a week ago today after leaving the Troutdale airport. . This view Is unsupported, however, by official U.S. sources in Hong Kong who indicated that while Commu nist China has suffered crop failures there Is no strong in dication that a government collapse Is Imminent. Johnson flew here today from Formosa where he cheered Nationalist Chinese officials with assurances that the United States has no in tention of recognizing Com munist China. Having reached midpoint in his two week tour, Johnson planned a one day stopover here before going to Thailand. On the first section of his 28,000 mile Asian tour he has run into heavy, enthusiastic crowds, almost a constant round of official functions and temperatures hovering in' the 80s. Before leaving Taipei this morning he stood beside Pres ident Chiang Kai-shek as the venerable Nationalist Chinese leader told newsmen about pledges of continued U.S. support for his regime. Local Youth Held In Carson City Harlen Lee Harmon, 18, of 1205 East Main St., who is wanted by Medford authori ties for embezzlement and for the passing of more than a dozen bad checks in the area since May 1, was bound over to the grand jury in Carson City, Nev. Friday on a charge of robbery. Harmon waived the right to a preliminary hearing, and is being held on 115,000 ball. It was reported that first de gree kidnaping charges may be filed against him. The Medford man was ar rested by Nevada authorities early last week at a Lake Ta hoe roadblock after he had robbed and abducted several persons. In each case It was reported that he forced his victim to drive him a short distance before releasing him unharmed. Nevada officers said that Harmon admitted the three- day spree of holdups and kid naplngs which Involved two service stations and a private home in Reno and Carson City. . H. Morse pointed the subconv Low Level Jet Flights Scheduled in State Low level jet training flights In areas of eastern Ore gon, Washington, and north ern Nevada are scheduled to, begin soon by the Navy, ac cording to Rear Adm. Ber nard M. Strean, U. S. Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, Wash. The flights are a result of new navigational training re quirements for Navy jet air craft assigned his command. The navigation routes, called "Sandblower," have been carefully mapped out to avoid populated areas and airfields to insure against public nui sance and provide maximum safety, Strean said. :!, . He also quoted Berle as saying that the situation has made the rest of Latin America aware of the extent of which Cuban Premier Fidel Castro has link ed his fate to the Communist cause. , Edwards Lecture at Manor Wednesday The Medford Chapter of the Oregon United Nations as sociation will sponsor a lec ture by Paul B. Edwards, United Nations director for the Philippine Islands, Korea, Formosa . and . Hong Kong, Wednesday at- 8 p.m. . .The talk will be held In the club room of the Rogue Val ley Manor, and is open to the public. Those attending have been asked to use the east en trance. ' Edwards, who will speak of his work in the Far East, is en route to his post after a briefing at UN headquarters in New York. He said Kennedy had prom ised to oppose the recognition of Pelping or the seating of Red China in the United Na tions. Chiang said this definite stand will have "a great effect on boosting morale" among the Nationalist Chinese. Most Formosan government leaders had been extremely worried about the policies of the new administration as a result of the debate over de fense of the Nationalist off shore islands during the U.S. presidential campaign. But one high Nationalist official said just before John son left that the vice presi dent's remarks during his one day visit to Formosa were "reassuring to the republic of China and America's other anti-Communist allies in Asia." Before going to Formosa, Johnson visited South Viet Nam and the Philippines. Keno Station Plans Tours on Saturday Keno Armed Forces day, May 20, will be observed by Air Force personnel stationed at Keno Air Force station here with tours of the site and the local area. Located 23, miles southwest of Klamath Falls and adjacent to Route 66, the site is atop 6,600-foot' Hamacher moun tain. Air Force officials not ed that all of the installations are accessable along a smoothly-paved highway constructed in 1957. Keno, designated the 827th Radar squadron last July, has annually opened its Installa tions for public inspection on Armed Forces day. Hatfield leans toward more recognition of the increased population factor which the plan ignores but an aide says the governor has "no choice" but to let it go through and to the high court. A veto would let Appling, a fellow Republican, have a go at it.
