Backfire - A furnace back fire blew the smokepipe from the flue about 9:30 p.m. Thursday at the Russell Hol lingsworth residence, 3 17 South Orange st., firemen re ported. Firemen replaced the pipe and recommended the installation of a new flue. They reported a flue fire early Thursday afternoon at the home of Jack K. Busby, 737 West Jackson st. Drier Fire - A fire.occurred in an electric clothes drier at the Gerald Stewart home, 506 West Clark st., about 2:15 p.m. Thursday, according to firemen. The blaze was out on arrival of firemen who said that the motor apparent ly shorted. Car Blase - Considerable damage under the hood and dash resulted from a fire in a car owned by Stanley Scheel, route 1, box 169C. Thursday about 4:40 p.m. at Eighth and Fir sts. Firemen reported that gasoline from the carburetor aoDarently was ignited by a hot wire. . Men's Fellowship -The regular monthly meetins of the Men's fellowship, First Bantist church, Medford, will be held Tuesday, May 16, at 6:30 p.m., in the church dining room. Rock, Mineral Show Continues Today at Medford Armory Attendance yesterday at the annual gem and mineral show sponsored by the Roxy Ann Gem and Mineral club, Med ford, was "'very good," accord ing to Leland A. Mentzer, president of the local club. ' The two-day show began yesterday at the Medford Ar mory, Highway '99 south of Medford. Exhibits will be on display between 10 o'clock this morning and 6 o'clock this afternoon. Mentzer noted that the hall was "filled" with over 75 cases of displays from local rock collectors, as weti as ex hibitions from throughout southern Oregon and northern California. Mrs. Gertrude Penn, repre senting the Del Norte Rock hounds, a mineral club in Crescent City, Calif., was awarded the first place cup for the "most outstanding" display from an out-of-town club. Mentzer, who presented the award Saturday morning, noted that no competition was encouraged locally. Others Competing Other cities with rock clubs competing include Spring field, Grants Pass, Jackson ville, Camp White, Klamath Falls, and Illinois Valley. Outstanding exhibits at the show, one of the largest ever held here, Include large slices of palm wood from a collector in Fortuna, Calif. One piece measures 22 inches by 29 inches. The show is also the first showing of the large Chi nese vase found recently on the Oregon coast by Harold Wallace. Mr. and Mrs. Harrison of Medford have on display a "unique" collection of minu- ture carvings, according to club officials. Also displayed is one of the largest pieces of Variscite ever discovered. The piece on display weighs about 50 pounds and is a blue-color ed mineral. The other half of the piece was sent to the Smithsonian institute, Wash ington, D. C. Albert Keen of Portland is exhibiting a display of crys tals that have won recognition in various other shows. The display won a first place award in the Northwest Fed eration show held last fall in Eugene. Included in the activities at the show are commercial ex hibits, door prizes, grab bags, an agate slide show, carved lamps with revolving agate shades, an iris agate display, minerals, gold, Indian arti facts, fossils, desert sun glass, agate jewelry, and dendrites. A featured exhibit is the rock dinner, a full-course meal depicted wfth rocks and stones. A tumbled stone will be given with each ticket, and a snack bar is provided. Each exhibitor is awarded a ribbon for participating, and some are given special rib bons, Mentzer noted. Trailer Rental Firm Names Dealership A key dealership in the U-' Haul Trailer Rental system has been awarded to Bud Ken nedy, owner of Bud Kennedy's Union service station, 1251 South Riverside ave., Med ford.. Kennedy will be part of a network of more than 7,400 other dealers through the U.S. and Canada who make trailers and specialty rental equipment available by the hour or day for short, local moves or utility uses and a one-way basis for trips to ev ery point in the' U.S. Kenneth Miller, manager of the U-Haul company of Ore gon, announced that the local distributor will have trailers available in several sizes-from small four-by-six models to slx-by-sixteen foot tandem wheeled vans. , Portland Police Arrest Couple Portland-IUPD - A Portland man and woman were arrest ed and about $5,000 worth of stolen property recovered by police here Friday night. Taken into custody ' and charged with the burglary of the General Sheet Metal Works, Inc., here last Mon day were Charles R. Swift, 38, and Anita M. Franks, 30. 1 1 Obituaries EDWARD E. KRIDER Funeral services for Ed ward E. Krider, 61, who died at the VA Domiciliary Tues day, will be held at the VA cemetery. Eagle Point, Mon day at 2 p.m. The Rev. Law rence Eskay will officiate. Perl Funeral home is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Krider was born Nov. 16, 1899, and was a veteran of World War I. Survivors include two sis ters, Mrs. L. H. Peterson and Mrs. Ella Watson; and one brother, Charles F. Krider, all of California. ARTHUR SCHOENBERG Funeral services for Dr. Arthur R. Schoenberg, 63, who died Tuesday,, will be held at fetl Funeral home Monday at 10:30 a.m. Dr. George S. Roseberry, pastor of the First Methodist church, will officiate.
