Anyone desiring further information is asked to write Siskiyou Band Camp, Southern Oregon college, Ashland. 7,597 Jackson County People Get Benefits By the end of 1960, more than 7,597 people In Jackson county were receiving old-age, survivors snd disability bene fits. The total benefits paid to these people for December, 1960, was 477,079, according to Edward B. Jacobson, dis trict manager of the Medford social security office. "At this rate, a total of more than $5,800,000 a year is paid to Federal social security beneficiaries In Jackson coun ty," ha said. Nationally, almost 15 mil lion people were receiving about SI billion a month in old-age, survivors and disa bility insurance benefits at the close of 1960. Many of these people were made elig ible for benefits by the changes in the law made In 1960, such as the reduction in the amount of work required to qualify for benefits and the removal of . the age 50 re-1 quirement for disability bene fits. 20th Year of Benefits . Last year was the 20th year that social security benefits were payable, and the 25th in. niversary of the Social Secur ity Act, which became law in 1935. Changes In the law since 1935 have brought more than 9 out of every 10 people in the United States protection by old-age, survivors, and disabil ity Insurance protection paid for by taxes on employees, their employers, and the self- employed, 1 Earnings will be reported to the social security accounts. of more than 75 million workers during 1961, Jacobson noted. For the entire state,, old-age, survivors, and disability in surance payments at the end of December, I960, were be ing paid to 171,244 persons at the rate, of $11,199,562 per month. . v Crater Lions Fair Said Successful; May Expand Event An official of the Crater Lions club reported last week that the Crater Lions Sports fair Home and Garden show was "definitely'.' a success, and said the club is consider ing expanding the event by one day in the future. He called this "an av erage crowd." The three-day fair concluded last Sunday. Hawkins said if the . fair had extended for one more day by opening Thursday in stead of Friday, it would probably have attracted a crowd of better than 25,000. According to Hawkins, the club is considering expanding the length of the fair because the . fair facilities have im proved and because more ex hibitors are becoming interest ed in the fair each year. To ex pand it, Hawkins said, "seems like a better way of doing It." Sportsfair Publicity Chair man Frank M. Wilson said members of the Crater Lions club spent more than 1,000 voluntary man hours of work In ensuring the success of the 1961 fair. Included in this were the three days spent by five men putting up wiring for lights and electrical out lets. Two power poles were especially installed for the event by the California Ore- A gun ruwer vuiiipniiy . It took seven men two days and two evenings just to pro cure materials for and erect fences around the horse show area and the armory grounds, according to Wilson. Other Time Spant The Crater Lions also spent their time on: erection of tent, 75 hours; installation of swim ming pool, 50 hours; erecting fish pond, 10 hours; outdoor stage, 25 hours; indoor stage, 35 hours; ' and the construc tion of framework for the booths, 100 , hours. Just to name a few. When the members of the Crater Lions had set up the facilities for the show itself, they then assisted the partici pating exhibitors In preparing their exhibits. Each Lion also volunteered for a minimum of two four hour shifts during the show taking tickets, sell ing popcorn, parking cars op performing any one of the many tasks on which the suc cess of the show depended.
