The - victors in the two league scrapes also took the non-counting second games of doublebills. Crater bounced ' Ashland 7 to 1 and KF blank ed GP 7 to 0. Klamath will play Crater at Central Point at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Crater got all its runs in its loop fray in the third inning on two errors, two bases on balls, a single by Mike Glines and a triple by Darryl Sum merfield. Summerfield three baggered in the sixth canto for the only other Comet hit. Three-Hitter Ashland also got only three safe blows, one a three-baser by Steve Harris. Mike Pepper chucked effec tive relief for the Comets, SOC Spikers Crush Oregon Tech 103-28 Klamath Falls - Southern Oregon college concluded its dual track meet competition Friday by downing Oregon Technical, institute for the second time this season. The difference was an overwhelm ing 103 to 28. The Red Raiders chalked up their sixth dual triumph In six meets. It was the sixth time also that Doyle Bran som has tallied a triple for the Ashland school. He cap tured the 100 and 220-yard dashes in the blazing times of :09.8 and :22.2 and to.ok the broad jump with 20 feet 10 inches. . Southern Oregon won 13 of the 15 firsts and swept the high hurdles, the 440-yard run, the javelin, the broad jump and the 100. Principal purpose of the meeting was to satisfy base ball and Softball interests con cerning use of .the park. Cheney Lumber, owner of the lights, has agreed to give them to the county. The gift is aimed at helping baseball continue here. Cheney Lum ber has sponsored semi-pro and Legion aggregations here. California Oregon Ppwer company reportedly has agreed to donate a light pole to temporarily replace on that was blown down in a Febru ary windstorm. It will be used until a longer pole can be supplied. Pacific Telephone Northwest will dig the hole for the pole and the softball team of C o m m u n i cations Workers of America, Local 9208, will provide labor for replacing damaged lights and adjusting lights in balance on the poles for proper coverage of the field. A volunteer work party is to be at the field today. Rob ert Haworth, city - county parks and recreation director, said that the diamond will be renovated so as to be avail able for both hard and soft ball. Top soil will be put in low and rough spots. There will be a permanent mound. Softball ers will adjust through appli cation of ground rules. Use of the park this sum mer is anticipated by the Medford recreation depart ment for its baseball school and leagues, the county soft ball association and Legion teams, Haworth reported. Le gion use likely will be occa sional since its play reported ly will be mainly at hWite City. Haworth emphasized that any other teams or groups in the county desiring use of the field may check with the city county recreation office at the Medford. city hall. Lakeview's Honkers Capture Rogue League Track Diadem CP Defeats SGP Teams Central Point - Central Point Junior high won both ends of a track meet Friday with South Grants Pass. Eighth grade score was 60 to 53 and the seventh grade count 42 to 35. Ken Jorde led the CP eighth with wins in .the shot put, discus and javelin and Larry Branch won the 75 and 150-yard sprints for the Point ers. Dr. J. Martin Adams, Klamath Falls, won Class A with 98 and Martin Clogston, Crater Cindermen Win From Pelicans Central Point - Crater High school, with nine of the 14 first spots, whipped Klamath Falls on Saturday 70 to 52 in a track and. field encounter. A 1 1 e n Phillips, Klamath Falls, and John Champ, Cra ter, were the only double win ners of the day. Phillips copped the brpad jump and the javelin and Champ both hurdle races. Dwight James leaped an even six feet in the high jump for the host Comets and Bill Kropp hurled (he discus a fine 151-4 for Crater. Other Comet winners were Gary Barber in the pole vault, Gary Wald in the 100-yard dash, Jack Mitchel in the mile, Joe McCalvy in the 440 and Darrel Badger in the 880. Ashland - Lak,eview high, newest member of the Rogue league, is the track champion of the circuit. The Honkers, with four first places and a tie for another, ran up 109 points at the Southern Oregon college oval Saturday to outscore its nearest challenger by 14 markers. Rogue River took second with 95. Defending champion Phoenix, its bid for a fourth crown spoiled, was third with 76. Henley had 58, Eagle Point 49 and Illinois Valley 47. Records tumbled in three events. Another standard was tied. One mark fell to Phoenix's Mike Consbruck with a 195 foot 6V2-inch javelin cast, Lakeview's Larry Taylor be came 880 -yard recordholder with 2:03.3 , and Lakeview's relay combine of Jim Griener, Chuck Cossey and Gary and Larry Peters set a new time of 1:34.4. Bob Chapman, Henley, tied a standard with : 1 5.5 in the high hurdles. Double Winners Griener won two events for the Honkers, the 100 and 220 yard romps. The'Lakeview tie for first saw Larry Peters share high jump honors with Eagle Point's Lew Whipple. Terry Gail was a double victor for Rogue River, taking the discus and shot put. In B Loyd Langston, Med ford, and Roy Beam, Rose burg, each busted 98 and Langston won the shootoff for runnerup trophy. Ryals was Class C winner at 16 yards with 96 and Ray Bartley, Myrtle Point, came next with 92. Myron Andrews took Class D with 94 and R. D. Rudig, Grants Pass, was second with 92 birds. The evening show Saturday was won by Larry Perry and Earl Head, :10.7, and Bud Tucker and Head, :11- for Henley and tied for first in the pole vault with Illinois Valley's Dave Kennedy. Mac seventh had a 42 to 35 margin and North's eighth was victor by 66 23 to 46 13. Mike Allen led the Bulldog seventh with firsts in the 75 and 150-yard races and the broad jump. Among the eighth graders Art Lee took the two dashes for McLoughlin. N o r t h's Crenshaw claimed the high hurdles and the high jump and Dippel won the javelin and discus. Allen set a new seventh grade mark for Mac with 17 feet IV. inches in the broad jump and Lindell Carney lip ped the shot put standard with 40-114. Three eighth grade records for McLoughlin fell as Lee ran the 75 in :08.4, Rick Templeton vaulted 9-9 and the relay team of Lee, Chester Henson, John Tun gate and Curt Wyatt toured the oval in :49.5. The racing fraternity lost one of its most illustrious and one of its toughest competi tors when Bettenhausen, 44, of Tinley Park, 111., crashed Friday while test driving the car assigned to Paul Russo, Fortville, Ind. The tragic crash, the first fatality at the Speedway since 1959 "won't change a thing" as far as the time trials go, said defending pole spot champion Eddie Sachs, Center Valley, Pa., who ' predicted record speeds. However, It robbed the speedway of the number one contender for the pole spot. For it was Tony, a week day farmer and week end race driver, who had set the pace in practice and wanted to be the first driver here to crash the illusive 150 miles per hour barrier. Hunter Safety Teacher Class Starts May 18 Central Point Instructors classes to train men to con duct the juvenile hunters' safety course in southern Ore gon will get underway on Thursday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m. at the clubhouse of Cen tral Point Sportsmen's club on West Pine st. i Cal Giesler, hunter safety supervisor for the Oregon state game commission, has indicated he will attend the session to assist in the train ing program. The game com mission has authorized the Sportsmen's club to hold the instructor's classes. A safety course will be compulsory for juveniles un der 18 years of age who wish to obtain hunting licenses when House Bill 1479 passed by the Oregon Legislature be comes law. The assistance of civic or ganizations and many adults, it is felt, will be necessary to take charge of the training of boys and girls. The game commission and the state po lice have emphasized the need for qualified persons for this program in order that south ern Oregon young people will be prepared to obtain licenses. A particular appeal has been made by the Central Point club for men who will serve as instructors. Those who can do to do are asked to contact Mervyn Gleason as soon as possible.
