Sixty-four two-man teams were paired for the first round which it to be com pleted by May 14. All teams started in the -i championship. First round losers will drop into the first flight. v In the tourney each partner plays his own ball and uses his own full handicap. Extra hole matches will be decided on sudden death basis. A three-ball sixsome tour ney will be held on Sunday, May 14, with drawing for partners at 1:30 p.m. Golfers, to compete, must be present for the draw. There will be prizes for low gross, low net, closest to the pin and long drive In men's and women's divisions. Ray. Lindquist took low gross laurels last week in ball sweepstakes with a 72. Larry Duff's Hit and Miss team was second with 62, Bob . Duff's Busters , had 53 and Max Weston's Hot Shots 20. Gene Hunt wound up the tourney, with a 93.3 bird aver age. Otlier top averages were : Charles Skeeters 93, Myron Andrews 92.4, Paul Culbert son 90.8, Loyd Langston' 90 and Henry Niedermeyer 90. Other highlights last week end were Harry Tonn's 50 straight and George Gal braith's win with 110 in the added bird handicap. Tonn finished with a 98 count. Twenty-fives at 16 yards were fired by Aubrey Sander, An drews, Lew Bates, Dixon Ken ner, Niedermeyer and Ed Pease. Tonn and Langston broke 25 each in the handicap. 302 High Total Hit and Miss had high total score, 302, and high five, 229 on the final day of the Elks' event. The team collected 17 points. The Busters and Re loaders each claimed 12 mark ers and the Hot Shots four. Total scores included 285 by Busters, 270 by reloaders and 82 by Hot Shots. Busters had a 223 high five count and Reloaders 217. Local Elks will take part on May 26 in their state asso ciation's shoot at Bend. Medford Gun club will be host this Saturday and Sun day for the annual Mail Trib une tourney. LaVorante Foe Of Zora Folley Los Angeles - HTD - Heavy weight challenger Zora Fol ley, Chandler, Ariz., tonight meets youthful Alejandro La Vorante of Argentina in a 10 round bout at Olympic Audi torium. Folley, ranked No. 3 in the heavyweight ranks, was fa vored 5-2 to defeat LaVorante who has had only 13 profes sional fights. But LaVaronte is considered a strong oppo nent, having lost only one bout. Don Carter Triumphs In Masters Detroit - (UPD - Don Carter, one of the sports most amaz ing performers, Wednesday night won his first American Bowling congress master s tournament-the hard way as usual. The 34-year-old St. Louis, Mo., star, who almost always starts slow and finishes fast, had to battle from behind to beat another St. Louis bowler, Dick Hoover, for the crown. ' Hoover, gunning for his third master's title, and Car ter, were the only two un beaten bowlers from an orig inal field of 64 in the finals when they met Wednesday af ternoon in a sixth-round win ner's bracket match. Hoover, only twotime mas ter's champion, having turned the trick in 1956 and 1957, won 815 to 801. This forced Carter into the loser's bracket. Carter then whipped Billy Welu, another St. Louis star, 844 to 754, to get into the championship round. With one loss already in the double - elimination tourna ment, Carter had to beat Hoo ver twice to win the title. He did, winning the first four-game match 840 to 768. In the deciding match, in which he once again demon strated the class that made him "bawler of the year" five times including 1960, he fin ished with a rousing 254 game to win 888 to 826. The best Carter had ever done in the Master's before was third in 1958. The BOWLERS ALLEY i By DARIENE AND BIU TOPE Talent Captures Invitational Track Tussle Eagle Point - Talent took firsts in two divisions and rolled up 246 points for over all honors and the revolving trophy last week end in the Eagles Invitational grade school track meet here. Rogue River was second in aggregate with 221. Eagle Point scored 181, Shady Cove 112, Gold Hill 92, Evans Val ley 73 and Sams Valley 19. Talent ran up 90 markers to top Class A and headed Class B with 104. Eagle Point topped Class C with 66. Class A scores included Rogue River 86, Shady Cove 59, Eagle Point 47, Evans Valley 33, Gold Hill 32 and Sams Valley 7. In Class B the tabulations showed Rogue River 76, Eagle Point 68, Gold Hill 28, Evans Valley 22, Shady Cove 20 and Sams Valley 12. Rogue River took runnerup in Class C with 59.
