his younger cister whose dis
appearance set off a massive
60-hour two-state search, were
bathed, fed and returned safe
ly today to their parents.
Benny Martinez, a suburban
Crystal Lake, 111., grade
school student, and his sister
Raenyl, 12, "surrended" them
selves hungry and tired Wed
nesday night to Chicago po
lice 45 miles from home.
Their wanderings began
Monday morning after Benny
persuaded his sister to run
away with him "because I
didn't do my homework over
the week end."
Countryiid Scoured
The trip carried them from
Crystal Lake near the Wis
consin state line to Chicago
near the scenes of some of
the city's most brutal child
abductions and murders. More
than 100 police and volun
teers had scoured the coun
tryside and turned up only
Benny's books and a jacket
until Benny called police from
a gas station.
"Everybody makes mis
takes," the children's step
mother, Mrs. Martinez said.
"But I got no idea why they
ran away."
Mrs. Martinez married the
children's father, Lawrence, a
lumber worker, eight years
ago. Their mother was report
ed to be living In Bakersfield,
Calif.
Coupla Car Rid
Benny told police who pick
ed the children up at a gas
station south of the Loop that
they walked five miles from
home to Cary, 111., Monday.
There a couple gave them a
ride "almost to Chicago" and
25 cents each.
They slept Monday night in
an abandoned garage and
Tuesday night in a new home
under construction. Monday
they went to a playground all
day before deciding to "give
ourselves up," Benny said.

Nixon Flies To West Coast After Kennedy Attacks
Columbus, Ohio - VPD -Former
Vice President Rich
ard M. Nixon flies home to
California today from, a na
tionwide speaking trip during
which he sharply criticized
the Kennedy administration.
The 1960 Republican presi
dential candidate told a cheer
ing Republican crowd here
Wednesday night that Presi
dent Kennedy had talked of
challenges from the Commu
nists but had failed to call for
a single sacrifice.
Instead, Nixon said, Ken
nedy "has been comforting
them by telling them what
the government would do for
them."
Nixon said Kennedy had
toned down his drive for his
domestic program because the
conservative mood of the
country made it politically
expedient.
But, he said, there had been
no change in principle on
Kennedy's part and if the
Democrats made gains in next
year's congressional elections,
Kennedy would consider it a
"green light for going ahead
full throttle on programs
which would lead to Increas
ing spending, higher taxes
and more federal control in
the lives of every American."

. Nixon, during ' his trip,
spoke out sharply for the first
