Ik; Attempt To
Raise Treasure
Ship Planned

fabulous treasure - which it
may or may not have carried
The fortune-hunt will take
place in San Francisco Bay
in the shadow of Alcatraz Fed
eral Prison,
It was on 1 Washington's
birthday 60 years ago that the
Rio, inbound from the Orient,
crashed into a rocky ledge
while groping through sponge
. thick fog in the Golden Gate.
The steamer went down
within hailing distance of the
San Francisco shore. But the
fog .was so thick that word
of the wreck didn't reach the
city for two hours.
. Of the 211 persons aboard,
128 were lost. ' ' -. . i ' "
- Periodic diving, drilling
and digging have failed to
yield a trace of the vessel or
its cargo. '
Persistent Rumors '
The U.S. Department of
Commerce ruled officially
that the ship was carrying
nothing more valuable than
Japanese sake. But persistent
rumors of sunken treasure
have continued through the
years. . j , -
The owner of an Oakland
diving school, Al Mlkalow, is
the latest to fall under the
spell of the Rio's mystery.
Mlkalow plans to start div-
lng this summer for what he s
positive Is a treasure-seeker's
dream of gold and Jewelry,
"Here's what I know," he
said. "There's $75,000 in gold
coins in the strong room
There's $46,000 in $20 gold
pieces: with an estimated val
ue today of between $3 and
$4 million.
"And there's at least $37,-
000 worth of passengers
jewelry. Insurance compan
ies paid off on that much."
. Mikalow based bis opti
mising on the ship manifest
for the Pacific Mall Steamer's
voyage from the Far East to
Honolulu. The manifest for
the, Honolulu-San Francisco
passage went down with the
ship.
Mlkalow's taking the word
of William Madeira on the
$73,000 in gold coins. ' Ma
deira, a retired postal inspec
tor who Uvea In Woodslde,
Calif., claims to have seen the
coin put aboard the Rio In
, Honolulu. He was an assistant
postmaster there at the time,
and said he went aboard the
ship to load the gold coins.
. Chinese Silver .
"Madeira said he also saw
"couple of million" worth
of Chinese silver.
"They looked like lead
bricks stacked on the floor
of the strong room,"i he said.
"I asked the purser what It
was and he told me It was a
couple of million in Chinese
silver.".
Past attempts to find the
Rio have extended from the
Seal Rocks, through the Gold
en Gate to Alcatraz In the
Bay. , Mlkalow will concen
trate on an area few hun
dred yards off Alcatraz.

If Mlkalow aind Madeira are
right, the tough convicts on
"the Rock" may see a harvest
of booty plucked from the
. bay right under their noses.

Macmillan Plans;
Security Probe

ister Harold Macmillan today
announced a sweeping Inves
tigation of security proce
dures and practices In British
government services. -
He made the announcement
in the House of Commons in
the wake of two major Cony
munlst spy cases involving
civil servants. .
. Macmillan said the security
review would be carried out
by "a body of Independent
persons of standing who will
between them be able to bring
to bear on Hhis problem a
Judgment based on wide and
varied experience."
He said he had ordered the
review following "public
anxiety" in the case of George
Blake, a Foreign Service em
ployee sentenced last week to
43 years in jail. Blake was
found guilty of passing Brit
ish secrets to the Soviet
L'nlon, and there has been
speculation that he actually
was a double agent.
