IT has become fashionable to characterize
the American teen-ager as a snarling,
don't-tell-me-anything rebel.
Since I've been scouring the country (or
family weekly Miss Somebodies, I've been
relieved to find that this type of teen-ager is
rare. Certainly Kathy Johnson of Trenton,
N. J., the sixth "unknown" girl to become a
Miss Somebody, isn't one of them.
A junior at Trenton Central High School,
16-year-old Kathy is a tall (5-foot-7),
raven-tressed, Ava Gardner-type beauty.
Born in the same modest house in Tren
ton she lives in now, Kathy consciously
centers her life around her parents, Boyd
' and Jane Johnson, and her 19-year-old sis
ter Carol. It's a familiar sight to neighbors
to see the Johnsons piling into the family
auto on Sunday after they've attended
services at the Broadstreet Methodist
Church to drive to nearby Princeton for
a day of horseback riding.
Kathy is a straight "A" student at school
"because I work hard and study at least
four hours a day. I want to be a medical
technologist (you know, do lab work, blood
tests, and things), and that means college
and good marks."
The late Dr. Tom Dooley of MEDICO has
been her inspiration. A snapshot of him still
hangs over her bed. She wrote to him sev
eral times. When he answered one of her
letters with: "Your concern and kind
thoughts are rain for my roots and fuel for
my fire . . ." she began to gather supplies
to send to his jungle hospitals.
"Her medical aspirations actually began
long before she had ever heard of Dr.
Dooley," her father recalls. "Even when
she was a little girl, her favorite Christmas

toy was a doctor's kit. She was forever
pasting bandages on us and prescribing
little candy pills." ,
One might expect a popular beauty like
Kathy to have a life complicated by
. plenty of dates. That's not the case, how
ever. Kathy says: "I like dates, but I'm old
enough to realize it can be overdone. A
Sunday football-game date is nice. Dating
several nights a week is another story. Be
sides," she adds shyly, "I sort of like older
boys, and I haven't met too many."
Kathy, unlike most of her contemporaries,
entertains no theatrical dreams. "I study
drama in school and love it, but I like alge
bra better," she maintains. "Being a medi
cal technologist and helping people means
much more to me. Sounds dull, but it's ex
citing to me."
Kathy is a teen-ager any parent would
be proud of; just as family weekly is proud
to present her as a gorgeous, wholesome
cover girl and Miss Somebody.
Whether it's for outdoor jaunts or indoor projects, the Johnsons are a family that often
get together. Here, Carol (left), Kathy, Mom, and Dad are enjoying a favorite game.
