MEDFORD, OREGON Play Slated In Phoenix Phoenix - "Cheaper by the uozea," a tnree-act comedy dramatized' by Christopher Sergei, will be presented by the Phoenix High Mask club Friday and Saturday, May 12 and 13, at the high school gymnasium. A cast of 16 will be assist ed by a production staff of more than 40. It will be di rected by Robert Myrlck, club advisor. Heading the cast as Mr. and Mrs. Qilbreth will be Richard Coulter and Pat Diederich. The event, held in the home of Mrs. Harry Chapman, followed a meeting of the Christian Women's Community fellowship of Hornbrook Methodist church; Mrs. Howard remains active in both the church and the fellowship group. She has lived in Hornbrook for 52 years. ' Mrs. Clara Howard Is Honored at Hornbrook Hornbrook -Asurprlse birthday party honoring Mrs. Clara Howard on her 90th birthday was held April 27 at the home of Mrs. Harry Chapman. The party followed a short business meeting of the Christian Women'a Com munity fellowship of the Hornbrook Methodist church. Mrs. Howard was born in Illinois April 27, 1871, and lived in Nebraska, Washing ton and Qregon before com ing to Hornbrook, where she has made her home for the past 52 years. In Church Work She lives alone in her own home here and does her own housework, is in good health, even reading without the aid of glasses. She is active in the Hornbrook Methodist church, and is noted in the communi ty for her keen memory, and her ability to recite long poems she learned as a girl. Mrs. Howard has been a widow since 1923 when her husband, George, was killed in an automobile accident. She has two sons, Ward, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Otto, Ashland, Ore., who with his wife, spent part or nis moin er'a birthday with her, and is a frequent visitor. She also has a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Aletha) Wiley, Los Angeles, seven grandchildren and six teen great-grandchildren. Many Visit Mrs. Howard received many cards and gifts, and the birthday cake for her party was baked by Mrs. Dudley Killingstporth, oresldent of the CWCF. Guests helping ob serve her birthday were Mrs. Minnie Bloomingcamp, Mrs. Frank Ward, Mrs. R. N. Lee, Mrs. Zela Elmore, Mrs. Wayne Cummins, Mrs. Hen ley Clawion, Mrs. Ernest Adams, Mrs. Ardon Burns, Mrs. Mary Taggart, Mrs. Mil ton Bradford, Mrs. Ivon How ard, Mrs. lone Graham, Mrs. Killingsworth, and Mrs. Ber tha Bradley, Mrs. Howard's next door neighbor who has "kept an eye on her" and "chauffered" her around faithfully for many years.' . Elliot, who have taken colored slides throughout the world, will present a "magic carpet" pro gram trip Monday, May 8, to the Arm Chair Travelers at 1 p.m. at the Senior Activity center. After the program the host ess and members will plan their part in the open house to be held at the center Sun day, May 14. They have been asked to be hosts trom 1 to 2 p.m. Hosts for the second hour will be the two art Classes that meet Tuesday and Sat urday afternoons, according to Mrs. Clayton Walker, open Spring Concert Thursday at High School Thursday, May 11, the Vocal Music department of Medford High school will pre sent its annual Spring con cert starting at 8 p.m. in the auditorium. Included in the program will be selections by the Mixed chorus. Girls chorus, and the choir. Among the numbers selected by the Girls chorus and choir will be selections performed at the re cent Southern Oregon Music Contest-Festival where both groups received superior rat ings. Numbers by the Girls chor us will include an arrange ment of the "Old Woman and the Peddler" by K. K. Davis; "Spring," by Lloyd Ffautsch, a modern American composer; and "Huswifery, by Richard Winslow. . The choir will feature "All Breathing Life," "Sins and Praise Ye the Lord," by J. S. Bach; "Ballad of Brother hood" by Joseph Wagner; and Have Ye Not Known" and Ye Shall Have a Song" by Randall Thompson. They will also sing several spiritual and lighter numbers. Also on the program will be selections by guest artist, Mrs. Exlne Anderson Bailey, pro fessor of voice at the Univer sity of Oregon. Mrs. Bailey has selected her program from standard concert repertoire, and her numbers include an aria, art songs, and a mod ern number. She will be ac companied by Dr. Stacey Green, professor of piano and theory, and assistant dean of the school of music, - Two Girls Elected To Council Layle and Lanae Bostwick of Talisman Rosebud council, Pythian Sunshine Girls of Medford, were elected to grand offices at the recent grand council in Corvallls. Layle was elected grand char ity and Lanae, grand histo rian. - Mrs. Harry Bryant of Med ford was elected grand royal advisor for the council and Edward Bryant and Mrs. Wal ter Grochocki, Phoenix, were elected grand counselors. Med ford girls chosen to be on the initiation team were Linda Severson, grand royal guide, and Pam Wyatt, grand royal mystic one. Syrena Gay and Ronnie Paulson were initiated at the session. Others attending from Medford were Barbara Kadin, Barbara and Judy Cooper, Su san O'Duane, Phyllis and Donna Overturf, Vickl Sue Webster, Margaret and Betty Grochocki, Donna, Kelly and Mary Carol Copeland, Fran cine Gilbert, Regina Robert son and Connie Jo Merriman. Officers of the local coun cil will be installed at the next regular meeting at 7 p.m. May 11. The meeting is open to the public. Bridge Club Is Formed Ashland-Formation of the Ashland Duplicate Bridge club has been sanctioned by the American Contract Bridge leatfue and will begin ses sions May 11, It was announc ed today. Games will begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays at the Mark Antony hotel. One master point event has been sched uled for the second Thursday of each month. Ashland bridge players are invited to attend the sessions, which will be open to all per sons interested. Players from Grants Pass and Medford have already expressed Interest in the club, the newest duplicate group in Oregon, according to Mrs. Paul A. Hilton and Mrs. Patricia Gilhousen, who will supervise club operation and games. house chairman. During this week's classes, pictures will be chosen to be shown In the annual art exhibit. The Woodcarving class and the new Drama group which meets each Wednesday, will be hosts from 3 to 4 p.m. The Spanish classes and the Senior orchestra will be In charge from 4 to 5 p.m. This afternoon at 2 o'clock the Senior Center orchestra will play for the congregation at the New Age church near Eagle Point. They will plan music for the open house next Sunday at the center and May 16 will play for the Hammond Organ Society at Purucker Music House at 8 p.m. Hostesses for the regular classes will register guests during the open house. They include Mrs. Judd Greenman, Mrs. Alvin Reed and Mrs. Helen Ditmanson, Miss Gladys Eaton and Mrs. Martha Bow ker, and Mrs. Edith Whillock and Mrs. Pearl Spackman. Teachers and leaders for the classes who will act as hosts with the members are Dr. Frank Roberts, Arnold Jenny, Mrs. Victoria Staley, Clifford Platz, Mrs. Victor Birdseye, Mrs. Blanche Rein berger, Thayer Tarvln and Edward Root. . Assembly Names Miss Buffington Worthy Advisor Jacksonville-Miss Lona Buf fington, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gall Buffington, was elected worthy advisor of Warren assembly, Order of Rainbow for Girls, at a meet ing last Monday evening at Jacksonville Masonic temple. New petitions for member ship were read and referred to the investigating commit tee. Reports were made on the roller skating party held Sat urday night. Mrs. Gertrude Winningham, mother advisor, asked the girls to have their merit points ready by the next meeting so awards can be raade by the time grand as sembly convenes in June. The Mothers club was in vited into the assembly room to hear the reading of the newly elected and appointed officers and committees by Miss Buffington. She an nounced that a practice in preparation for Installation of officers Friday, May 12, was set for Saturday afteviioon, iiaay o. Miss Mary Beth Housel, outgoing worthy advisor, ex. pressed thanks to her officers for their -help during her term. The next regular meeting will be held Monday evening, May 15. ' . Arrives Central-Point - Mrs. Mor ton Holden, San Fernando, Calif., arrived in the valley last week to visit in 4he home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Glen Curtis, Medford. The annual show will be held May 13-14 in the Medford armory on South Pacific highway. The gem and mineral show at tracts doiens of exhibitors from several citiesi n the western states, and thousands of visitors. Exhibits and displays will include an agate slide show, carved lamps with revolving agate shades, a display of iris agate, fossils, desert sun glass, agate jewelry and numerous other objects and articles. Miss Hobbs Is Queen Of Bethel Central Point - Miss Janet Hobbs, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest G. Hobbs, Central Point, was elected honored queen of Central Point Beth el, International Order of Job's Daughters, at the meet ing held in the Central Point Masonic hall May 2. Also elected were the Misses June Hopkins, senior princess; Sandra Beasly, jun ior princess; Judith Patterson, guide and Janice Ayres, mar shal. The formal installation of the new officers will take place June 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Masonic hall in Central Point. The Installation will be open to the public. Honored Queen Helen Goff announced that "Go to Church" Sunday is May 7 at the First Baptist church, Med ford. During the session, Miss June Hopkins, junior prin cess, reported on the recent Queen's ball held at the Rogue Valley Country club. Miss Janet Hobbs and Miss Janice Campbell were elected delegates to the Grand Ses sion of Job s Daughters to be held in Portland in June. Guests of the evening were the mothers of the bethel members. Each mother was presented with a nosegay of spring flowers and was hon ored at an addendum follow ing the ceremonies. Decorations for the evening were provided by the Misses Colleen and Patricia Knapp and Miss Linda Snyder; re freshments were served by the Misses Lorraine Scalberg, Elin Livingston and Sue Kel ley with assistance from their mothers. The annual meeting of the Guardian' Council will ' be held at 7:30 p.m. on May 10 at the home of Mrs. Jack Campbell, bethel guardian, Temple To Honor Charter Members And Past Queens Past queens and charter members of the order will be honored at a covered dish luncheon to precede the reg ular meeting of Zuleima tem ple, daughters of the Nile, Saturday, May 13, at Medford Masonic temple. Lunch will be served at 12 noon. Medford members are asked to bring hot dishes to the luncheon, and Ashland mem bers may provide salads or hot dishes. Mrs. Vernon Tur- pin, chairman, is being assist ed by Mrs. John Smith, Mrs. Rodney witham, Mrs. Eugene Orr and Mrs. Murray Gardi ner. Mrs. Roy V. Nord wick and E. G. Randolph, worthy matron and patron will preside. , As a tribute for the evening, the De Molay boys will pre sent their Mother's Flower lecture. John Eddy and John Smith will be the chairmen for the evening. At the last meeting Reames chapter presented Mrs. Jose phine Clark, who is 92 years old, with a 50 year pin. She joined Reames chapter in 1911. Three other 50 year members, Mrs. Mary Walking, Mrs. Maude Duffy and Mrs. Esther Coleman, were also honored. All were presented with corsages and Introduced from the east. Recital Announced Ashland-The annual spring term recital of the advanced piano students will be held Sunday, May 14, at 3 p.m., in Churchill hall, according to Miss Helene Robinson, head of the Southern Oregon col lege piano department. Solos and ensemble numbers will ba performed, ranging from tha literature of Bach to contem porary composers. The concluding number on the program is to be the Schu mann Concerto, played by Se ung Ha Rhee, with Miss Rob inson supplying the orchestra part on the second piano.
