Shingles (her pes Zoster) is a cond 1 1 1 o n due to the vi rtu of chicken pox. In adults this often will attack a nerve, and then in the skin along the course of this neive there will appear a line of blisters. Usu ally, in young adults, in a few weeks these blisters dry up and disappear. But In old peo ple, for reasons unknown, se vere pain may remain in the area for months. i That it is not arising in the affected nerve is shown by the fact that some years ago sur geons went in and cut the nerve and its little ganglion, and the pain went on unchang ed. Many surgeons tried lift ing up the affected area of skin and cutting it away from the tissues underneath, and that didn't help. Then they tried freezing the skin tem porarily with a spray derived from a little sprayer which one can buy In a drug store. Some said It helped, while others saw no effect. Many physicians have injected pro caine into the affected area, anesthetizing It temporarily, without entirely satisfactory results. A while ago I report ed in this column the work of some physicians who said that they had treated scores of these patients with every method that had ever been suggested, and they were not sure that any of the methods had given anything more than an hour s relief. My impression from read ing many articles on the sub ject is that the pain is arising up somewhere, perhaps In the spinal cord, and this is why 8:00 TB A ' 5:30 Wilbur and Mr. Id 0:00 DanSmoot 6:15- Channel 5 Report 6-30 Perry Maion 7:30 Checkmate 8:30 Have Gun, WiU Travel 9:00 Gunimoke 0:30 Outdoor Sportsman ' 10:00 Governor Hatfield 10:30 Manhunt 11:00 Final Report 11:15 "The Clock" I SUNDAY 10:10 sign on 10:25 Baseball. It would seem then that when an old person gets the pain that follows an attack of shingles, his doctor must try to find some general sedative that will give some rest, at least at night. ; Wril.rg Pulling My Leg Many a time J get a request for information so remark able, or I get a tale of illness so weird that I suspect that someone is pulling my leg. For Instance; here is a letter from a woman who says she has heard that often, when a child is born, there are as many knots in the cord run ning from his navel as he has had brothers and sisters. If the woman is not spoofing me, that is the most remark able bit of medical folk-lore I have hcaru of in a long time, and I have a small li brary on this subject. But here is a (possibly) leg pulling letter to end all leg pulling letters. It is from a man who asks if I can help him out of his distress and depression which now verges on the suicidal. He says his trouble is all due to much brooding over the fact that he is his own grandfather. I have gone carefully over his story and I am convinced that at least he has his facts straight. Married a Widow What happened, he says, was that he married a widow with a grown daughter. Then his father married his wife's daughter. "In this way my father became my son-in-law, and my daughter became my mother because she was my father's wife. When my wife presented me with a son he became my father's brother-in-law and also my unclei for he was the brother of my mother - my father's second Wife. Then my step-daughter had a son by my father.- This boy was, of course, my half- Sfereo At Its Finest! In the process, my wife became my grandmother since she was my mother's mother; and since the husband of one's grandmother is obviously his grandfather, I was my own grandfather." About the only way in which a reader can satisfy himself that all of the above statements are correct is to do as I did, and draw a geneticist's type of diagram of the family tree.
