8 A Ashland Women Attend Meeting - Ashlend-Four members of the Ashland Home Extension unit are in Corvallis this week attending the 29th an nual Oregon Extension coun cil meeting on the Oregon State university campus. Rep resenting the local unit are Mrs. J. M. Firestone, Mrs. Dale Fieguth, Mrs. Ernest Fieguth and ' Mrs. Robert Fremd. , . Fellowship Event Friday Ashland - The annual May Fellowship day observance of Ashland United Church Wom en will be held Friday, May 5, in the First Methodist church beginning with a 12:30 luncheon. The program will be presented at 1:30 p.m. in the sanctuary. ... "The Church, Free and Re sponsible" is the international theme for study and will take the form of a panel in which various members will partici pate. Christian freedom in its relation to church women is the subject that will be cover ed in talks by Mrs. Sidney Ainsworth and Mrs. J. P. It is stated that this program will be carried out regardless of the weather; the girls are expected to bring a sack lunch, a ' slt-upon, square headscarf, and to wear proper clothes. Frank Taylor will instruct the girls in campcraft and woodcraft, especially in rela tion to the use of a knife. bucksaw and ax, and conser vation. Bob Hawkins will be in charge of the unit on direction finding; showing the Scouts how to use the scout pace to determine distance, map study and the use bl a compass. Mil PARKING) MEDFORD MAIL 'The Rebels' Presented At College "The Rebels'', a monologue dedicated to the responsible uon-conformlsts who created our American heritage, ' was presented on Wednesday at Southern Oregon college by Philip Hanson. Hanson cleverly pieced to gether quotations and excerpts of historical speeches, in the characters of those who orig inally spoke them, thus creat ing a dramatic background of our"Revolutionary thought. Starting with Jefferson's "A little rebellion now and then is a good thing," Otis" "taxa tion with representation", and Franklin's "We must all hang togetner, gentlemen, or we shall hang seperately", Han son continued with .Edmund Burke's "Reconciliation", Phil ip Frerifeau, William Pitt, Pat rick Henry, "The Declaration of Independence" and "The Ride of Paul- Revere." Mr. Hanson interspersed his selections with stanzas from "The . New Colossus", the poem appearing on the base of the Statue of Liberty. These stanzas acted as a thread binding the presentation to gether into a whole. After tipping his hat to the restless ladies of the different periods, such as Mollie Pitch er, Susan B. Anthony, Carry Nation and Lizzie Border, Hanson ended his program with Walt Whitman. He in cluded in this last portion a fairly unknown quotation from Lincoln to McClellan: "U you don t want to use the' army, I "should like to borrow it." rne actor appeared on a sparsely furnished stage, look ing very dramatic in a red Jacket and black trousers (the red jacket was probably a re minder to the audience of the British origins of our institu tions). The audience was en thusiastic in welcoming Mr. Hanson back from his New York engagement with "Moby Dick." . 4 Williams Unit Installs Officers Williams-Installation of of ficers was held by the Wil liams Home Extension Unit at the home of Mrs. A. D. Fitzpatrick, Williams. Mrs. A. J. Lindquist was the co hostess to the 33 members at tending the Friday meeting. Mrs, Jerry Stone, Provolt and Miss Marlace Findley of Wil liams were guests. Mrs. Percy Sowell was in stalled chairman. Other new officers Include Mrs. John La- throp, vice - chairr.,an and Mrs. Emil Voss, secretary treasurer. . Mrs. Fitzpatrick, chairman, presided and arrangements were made for the group to attend Homemaker's Day in Grants Pass, May 17. Mrs. Percy Sowell and Mrs. James Mclntyre attend ed the May 2, 3, and 4 train ing meeting at Corvallis. The unit held a "Barrel of Fun" public event April 29 with Mrs. Lynn Stone arid Mrs. John Katzenbach, chair men. It was held at the Wil- liarhs school gymnasium with local talent participating. Films produced by the Cana dian Pacific railroad were shown. Proceeds will be used for club activities including scholarships. ' Following the business meeting, the newrly elected of ficers were installed by Mrs. Jerry Stone, county commit tee member. Mrs. Stone ex plained how home extension units were organized to help those who have finished their formal education to keep abreast of the times and im provements. This information is compiled at the Oregon State university, Corvallis, and distributed by the local county extension agents. The team of installing officers was Mrs. Fitzpatrick, Mrs. Dorothy Rippee and Mrs. Omar Lyttle. Each of the officers was presented a corsage. Mrs. Stone presented Mrs. Fitzpat rick with a past chairman's pin, after which Mrs. Mcln tyre read the Homemaker's Creed at the end of the cere monies. The program was ' on grooming, presented by proj ect leaders, Mrs. Voss and Mrs. Jack Collier, following the potluck lunch. They were j assisted by Mrs. Sowell and Mrs. W. W. Claypool for the demonstration of skin care and make-up. Secret pals were announc ed and new ones drawn. Hornbrook Woman Home From Trip Hornbrook Mrs. Marshall Horn has returned after a two-day trip to the Bay area. In Marysvillc, Calif., she vis ited with two nieces, Mrs. Arthur Powell and Mr. and Mrs. Ray Phillips, then she and Mrs. Phillips spent sev eral days In San Francisco with Mrs. Horn's brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. James Cobain.
