B-10 MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MAY 3, 1961 Many Factors Should Be Given Attention in Building New Home Ideas Available For Landscaping New homes are being con structed throughout the south ern Oregon northern Califor nia area, either for people moving into the area, or for residents who have long de sired to have a new home. Most homes are built by contractors or subdividers who construct several homes -of variations of similar floor plans, others are constructed by individuals on a do-ii-your-. self basis in spare time, and still others are individualized through an architect for the needs and desires of the home owner. But no matter how it is built, a person's home is his castle. It should provide en joyable living quarters, room for recreation and room for entertainment, not only as a family group, but also for guests. It also should be prac tical. Materials Available If the person is having a new home built for him, there are numerous materials avail able to make the home attrac tive. There are several types of building material, but the most popular still is the wood frame house. The basic wood-frame struc ture can be accentuated with one or more of several other materials such as brick, block or plastics, to satisfy individ ual tastes. Glass is becoming more popular for working into exterior walls when the view provides year - round enjoy ment. Interior walls provide more space for creative ability util izing wide selection of wood paneling, veneers, paints, stains, and wallpaper. Planning Interior Whatever Is used on the In terior, as on the exterior, it should "fit" into the room de cor. Interior decorators have the knowledge and experience of knowing what is practical, what is desirable and what is pleasant for everyday living. But for those who feel they can not retain an interior dec orator, paint stores and build-, ing supply . companies offer assistance in d e t e r m 1 ning what combination of materials or paints and wallpapers are desirable. Mountain Climbing May Be Enjoyed by More Area Hikers Mountain climbing is an in triguing sport, and can be en joyed by more people in this area who like to hike. Although there are many peaks from which panoramic views can be enjoyed in southern Oregon, the peak which provides the most spec tacular view is Mt. McLaugh lin, It Is not a hard mountain to climb for the,,, experienced . hiker, but those who are not used to hiking should "take it easy" on their first hike to the top of the 9,450-foot moun tain. Weil-Marked Trail There is a well-marked trail to the tree-line, but from there the trail may sometimes be hard to determine since the paint used to mark it weathers off. But the climb isn't too -hard. There are some areas Attention also should be given to the patio, or outdoor living area, which is popular in this area. There are various ways in making an outdoor living area attractive, not only to passers-by, but also to the home owner. The patio will be the scene of many summer time meals, evening get-togethers and for playtime activities for chil dren, and all these things should be considered in de signing the patio and land scaping it. ,:- Selection of Material Building suppliers offer a wide selection of material for patio floors, but probably the most popular is concrete. Shrubbery and flowers, or even a vegetable garden, will add to the patio's beauty and living desirability. Another important factor for the home is landscaping the property. There are sever al nurseries in this area which provide a wide selection of plants and hints for landscap ing. Many of the booths at the Crater Lions Sportsfair and Home and Garden show will provide area residents a view of materials available for homes, interiors, and patio and garden areas. where the hiker has to watch his footing, but the view from the top is rewarding. The Inexperienced hiker should go slow because the thin air will soon have him out of breath. Regular rest periods help the hiker regain his breath and energy and makes the hike more pleasant. All hikers going up Mt. McLoughlin should take wa ter and food, and plan to spend most of the day for the hike up and back. There is a register in a weather-proof box at the top for all climbers to sign. Two camp sites in Rogue River National forest are in California - Cook and Green and Hutton camps -In the headwaters area of the Apple gate river. There are many ways To make a yard attractive, and a drive around the valley will give area residents ideas. In some places, crushed rocks of various colors are taking the place of small lawn areas, or the background for flower beds. Rock gardens ap pear to . be becoming more popular, and some of them are built up off the lawn level with attractive rock or block work.
