Two Epsilon Sigma Alpha Members Honored Recently Mrs. Willie Fischer, Med ford, tied for first place as the "outstanding girl" at Ep silon Sigma Alpha sorority at the state convention April 21 23 at Coos Bay. Mrs. Leland Carpenter, also Medford, won third place. Mrs. Fischer, representing Alpha Lambda chapter, tied with Mrs. Carolyn Rissman, Albany, for the title and both women were presented cor sages and engraved trophies by last year's winner, Mrs. Harry Smith, Oakland. Mrs. Carpenter represented Delta Omega chapter. .; Mrs. Fischer was also elect ed state recording secretary and, as state educational di rector' for the past year, was presented a number of gifts from the outgoing state pres , ident, Mrs. Pauline Battles, Prineville. . . ; Other honors were received by local chapters and mem bers. Mrs. Lyman Smith, Alpha Lambda, was a Judge in the philanthropic contest and Mrs. Robert Rae worked on the budget committee for the state. Mrs. Smith, Mrs..B. H. Gilbert and Mrs. Carpenter also served on a committee. Mrs. Robert Shangle, Delta Omega, was appointed by the new 'president, Mrs. Arthur Hunot, to serve as state pub licity chairman and Mrs. Ver non Rush, Ashland, will be state chaplain. A number of women from local chapters attended the state event. Townsend Club To Form Team Plana are being made by the Medford Townsend club for organization of a worn. en's drill team, as a patriotic unit which will be used In ob servance of Flag day June 14. State Director Finis L Snodgrass authorized the new team. Seven club 'members were honored at last week's meet ing In recognition of birthday anniversaries in April. Visit ors attended from Klamath Falls,' Grants Pass, Ashland and Medford. Nearly 90 mem bers and guests were present. A five-piece band, "Moun tain Music Makers," played. Musicians were Mrs. Ellen Townsend, J. P. Graham, F. J. Clifford, Loren Walden and Gene Edwards. The club now has two. orchestras which will play on alternate Wednes days. ' The next regular meeting Is Wednesday, May 3, at 11 a.m. at the Pythian hall. Visitors are welcome to all sessions. Peterson was elected president of Travel Study club of the Oregon Federation of Women's Clubs at a meeting Tuesday, April 25, at Girls Community club. Mrs. John L. Mansfield was elected first vice president; Mrs. Horace T. Knight, treas urer; Mrs Jason Ottinger, re cording secretary; and Mrs. Edward C. Root, correspond ing secretary. , ...... Warren Wolf, art instructor at Medford High school, spoke at the meeting. He stated that he endeavors to bring out the "true vision of the American scene as seen by young Amer lea," and encourages his stu dent s to appreciate beauty even In the simple objects of everyday life. An exhibit of of the best work of his stu dents accompanied his talk. Mrs. Robert Billingsley, chairman of fine arts for first district, spoke on programs carried out by other Federat ed clubs In the district to fur ther an appreciation of art. In cooperation with Hall mark Greeting Card company, the General Federation of Women's Clubs awards schol arships, in art training each year to three senior high school students selected from several hundred contestants. Miss Nlcki Nears of Medford High school was chosen., this year to compete in the con test, with Travel Study club as her sponsor. Paintings were also exhibit ed by Mrs. ' Willis T. Fasel, Mr. Edward Root and Mrs. Ross Twedell, a guest of the club ' Mrs. William E. Boone and Mrs. Carl W. Peterson were appointed delegates to the Oregon Federation conven tion, to be held May 8-0 at Pendleton. Mrs. Norman Wade and Mrs. Jack Brum mond are alternate delegates. Mrs. Jack Brummond gave the . "responsibility of mem bership" to three new mem bers, Mrs. Cora Chandler, Mrs. Hazel walwyn and Mrs. Ha zel Dickson. Guests of the club were Mrs. Ross Twedell, Mrs. J. Harrison, Mrs. Francis Wllkerson, Mrs. Beryl Ingle and Mrs. Lynabel Dick. Refreshments were served from a buffet table centered with pink tulips and lilacs and tall pink tapers. Lee and Mrs. Boone, Miss Cardoza Is ' Honored at Party Hornbrook - A surprise birthday party honoring Miss Jeannle Cardoza on her 1 8th birthday anniversary was held April 23 at the A. W. O'Connell, WAVE programs officer, Se attle, will visit the Medford Navy recruiting station Wednesday, May 3, to inter view women college students and graduates. Young women interested in opportunities for appointment as officers in the Navy are invited to call at the office in the Post Office building during the day. The Navy Is currently of fering commissions as ensigns to college graduates between the ages of 20 and 27 who have the "mental, moral and physical character required." For college juniors who haven't decided on a career, the Navy is offering a special summer program. An eight week session between junior and senior year is planned as part of the WAVE officer can didate program which is com pleted upon graduation. . Other opportunities are of fered for young women be tween 18 and 25 who are high school graduates. They may be trained in 24 different oc cupational specialities. The girls were chosen by an auxiliary committee on the basis of leadership, character, courage, honesty, scholarship, and physical fitness. Oregon's Girls' State was organized in 1940 and has been held every year, except one during World War II. The first session was held at Silver Creek Falls, but as the program grew it was necessary in 1048 to move the sessions to the Willamette uni versity campus In Salem. Now delegates draw inspiration from the beautiful Capitol building across the street. The Medford unit, under whose sponorshlp this pro gram is carried locally, has sent 75 girls since the project was started. .. . . t Gold Hill Group Sets Election of Officers Gold Hill The Golden Circle Women's group of the Gold Hill Christian church will meet Thursday, May 4 at 1 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Edna Tracy, 735 Fifth avenue in Gold Hill. Election of officers will be held and a discussion of pro posed changes in the program. OREGON irl Scouts Ceremony Held Brownie Troop 36, Wash ington school, held an investi ture ceremony April lb for L a r 1 n d a May O Connor. Guests were Shirley Pearson, Carol Pennington, Diana Davis, Francis Wllioughby, and Kathy Heiken. Recently the troop has made several field trips. One was a visit to the- farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Igo, where they saw baby rabbits and several other farm animals. Mrs. Igo served the troop re freshments. . .The troop also visited Verl an Jacoby, whose hobby is lapidary work. He explained about the different types of rocks and how they are cut and polished; the girls learned that he has received awards for his exhibits. Luncheon was served for. the troop at the home of the leader, Mrs. Don old Stratford, assisted by Mrs. BUI Butler. Belinda Butler was a guest. Members hive also recently appeared on the "Uncle Bill Program" on KBES-TV. On April 11, the troop toured Hart's Hatchery where mem bers saw eggs in all stages of development and also day old chicks. Cub Scout Den 7 from Washington school made the trip with them. Mrs. Bill Butler, den mother, Gene Gro- leau, Mrs. John Birch, Merlyn Stratford, and Carol Riecke also accompanied them. According to the leader the trooD has attended each of the monthly Brownie skates at the Rollarena and has enjoyed them. Mrs. Carl Riecke is assistant leader. Miss Carol Riecke, from Troop 2, has been assist ing with the troop; she is working on her first class rank requirements. Parents assisting with tnc tours are Mrs. John Mast, Mrs. Birch, Mrs. Riecke, and Mrs. Stratford. Brownies In the troop are Vicki Ann Aus tin. Margaret Birch, Larinda O'Connor, Marta Czekli, Merl Czekll, Rhonda Breedlove, Karla Legg, Merry Mast, Kathy Rleke, Marie Stratford. The troop meets weekly at the Stratford home. Family Returns To Spokane Home Ashland - Visiting for the past month at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Hlld, 340 Morton street, have been Mrs. Roland Wright and children, Brenda and Scotty. Grandmothers Hold Birthday Luncheon; Members Announced The birthday luncheon of Rogue chapter, Grandmother Clubs of America, was held April 24 at the Girls Com munity club. Forty-nine mem bers and guests, Mrs. Susan Eads and Mrs. C. E. Coggins, attended. Twelve tables were deco rated for different months and guests chose the table according to ' their birthday.
