General Challe was flown back to Paris, under ar rest, to face a military court and possibly a firing squad. ; r (UPI Telephoto) Moose Drum Corps To Be in Parade The Medford' Moose Junior Drum corps is expected to be among bands, floats and equ istrlenne groups in the parade at the annual -Azalea festival Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and 28, at Brookings. j .Gov. and Mrs. Mark Hat field will pay an official visit ' to the festival, and. many oth er special events are planned for the Brookings-Harbor area during the week end. Queen Randl Hopkins will be crowned in Azalea State park following the parade. A crab feed, rodeo, square dance jamboree, community worship service and barbecue also are planned. ': y j '..- BOY DROWNS IN HOLE K Old Tappan, N.J.-flJPD-Four-year-old Stuart Bennet drown ed Wednesday when he fell into a water-filled hole dug for a septic tank In a new housing development. The boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Bennet, was found in the hole by a construction worker who dived into the water after seeing the boy's baseball bat floating on the surface. (Jerry) Gastineau, 40, has lived in Medford since 1955, when he moved here from Newport to accept the position of regional manager of the Equitable Life Assur ance Society. ' ! He was born in Baring, Mo., and ' following graduation from high school was a pro fessional baseball player for three years as pitcher for the Three I league (Illinois, In diana and Iowa). Gastineau moved to Oregon In 1935 to attend Willamette university, Salem. While there he coached at Chemawa In dian school, as one. of several jobs he held to help pay his college expenses. . Upon graduation from'Wll- lamette In 1940, he entered the Navy for three years. He served in the Pacific Theater during world war 11. -Moves to Ashland He moved to Ashland after his discharge, and coached at Ashland High school before moving to Newport to accept the position of principal and then superintendent of schools. He held that position until 1955.; . ,, Gastineau is - president of the Rogue Valley chapter of the Life Underwriters associa tion; and in 1957 and 1938 he served as . Jackson county chairman for the National Foundation. He has been ac tive in the Boy Scouts, hav ing served as finance chair man for the Big Pines district. District Manager Ross A. Youngblood made the pre sentations. Kupillas - is assistant unit forester in the Greensprings Forest Management area. In 1960, he not only performed his own job assignment with distinction, but he acted as unit forester for a three month period, the bureau re ported. He is a graduate of Syracuse university college of forestry, and has been with BLM for five years. Hastey, assistant district en gineer, is a graduate logging engineer from the University of Washington. .He .has been with the Medford office for four years and earned the award "by not only doing his own job assignment with hon ors, but carried the work load of the district engineer's office for' four months," according to the bureau. 4-H Leader Speaks At KiwanisClub Ashland - Victor Stewart, leader of the Sla-Q 4-H club, spoke on the 4-H program at a meeting of Ashland Kiwanis club this week. v He described materials, rec ords and procedures used in 4-H and displayed trophies and record books on winning animals.: His son, Steve, gave a dem onstration on "A year In a 4-H beef club." , The club leader explained that since a 4-H club is an edu cational program, it is im portant to have good materials and Information, such as are supplied by Oregon State col lege. The county extension staff provide professional as sistance, he said. Steve Stewart, president of the Sis-Q club, told how mem bers select their steers, how they feed the animals, and how they get ready and show their animals. ' He explained tlie educational program on disease, pests, parasites and other related subjects, and the operation of the auction at the county fair. Hagerty was Eisenhower's press secretary, Adams was chief presidential assistant and Shanley was Cabinet Secretary. , i jam I JERRY GASTINEAU Local Eagles Host To Region Aeries Crater Lake aerie of the Fraternal Order of Eagles was host to aeries of region 5 of Oregon last week end. Nearly 250 members from through out Oregon attended the meet ing and a state drill team jamboree at the Medford hall. William T. Bigoni, Port land, past state president, was the main speaker and Harvey Hawley, Medford, was in charge of ritualistic competi tion. Jack Saterlee, Medford, is regional director. White, Air Force Chief of Staff, left, and Air Force Secretary Eugene M. Zuckert are shown as they testified before the Senate Mili tary Appropriations subcommittee. White said that failure to' meet the challenge and threat of Russia's mBn-ln-space feat "could prove disastrous."
