OREGON Dr. Churchill Says 15,000 Residents May React to Test "There are estimated to be 15,000 residents of Jackson : county who react positively to the tuberculin sKm test, and who should be watched with annual chest x-rays," Dr, 'Ambrose Churchill, director of the tuberculosis section of ; the Oregon state board of health told the annual meet- lng of the Jackson County Tu berculosis and Health assocla tion recently. Dr. Churchill- said the op portunity to wipe out tuber- culosis-has never been so -' nearly within reach as it is to f day. He went on to say that : there is a strain of. the tu bercle bacilli which , is de- developing resistance to. the drugs used to treat the germ and that there is an urgency in pushing toward total enmi : nation as quickly as possible. ' Practical Suaaesiion "We have the tools for find? lng tuberculosis early and for treating it successfully, there fore eradication is a practical . suggestion," he said. "At pres ent it is only by finding all known infections to prevent spread and make eradication ; possible. ' Compulsory screen ing may be the answer, . he stated. . . He pointed out ; that ' the 'tools for finding it include the chest x-ray and the tuber- - culin skin - test. There are estimated to be 40 million people in the United States who react to the skin test showing previous infection, and it is from this 40 million that 75 per cent of the new' cases will come. Dr. Churchill said a con ference of leaders in the pub- in M 'U; mow or IZOK f XTHi icv; ID P5ICB lie ' health and professional field in Oregon was held last October, and from this con ference came recommenda tions working toward eradi cation Some of these recommenda tions Included more intensive use of annual chest x-rays and skin tests, more 1 vigorous search of contacts of known cases, a registry of positive reactors, more careful check ing of , children, alcoholics who are known to have a high rate of disease, diabetics and teen-agers with positive re actions, wider use of chemo therapy in treatment and the reporting .of every new case by private physicians. We cannot afford to be complacent because the death rate has dropped, he stated Tuberculosis is a chronic, re lapsing disease communicable from man to man, animal to man and man to animal, and there is evidence of an in crease of tuberculosis among animals, Cattle are still infected and it is now estimated 10 per cent of the chicken flocks may be infected with the agrarian type. It is also found among salmon and trout, al though so far there Is no evi dence that it is transmittable to man. ' " Oregon now has a fairly low incidence rate but with the expected heavy . influx from states with a high rate, health officials and residents need to be alert. One of the major problems, he said, is that funds are not now avail able to, do more than alert the people. He pointed out the high cost of tuberculosis, both to the private Individu als and the public.- . Volunteer groups working with the professional and of ficial agencies is the only way to get eradication done, and the earliest possible date for that could be 2004, he con cluded. - New Navy Recruiting , Officer Now on Duty . Mrs. Kennedy, who was born in Canada, is a Medford High school graduate. She was married in Alabama, and later moved to Long Beach, Calif., living there until 1950, The couple have two daugh ters, Carol 12, and Pat,, 17. ' Prior to. working, for New comers, Mrs. Kennedy was employed at La Pointe's, Elks lodge and Harry Marshall realtor. Her husband is with Chore-Boy Western Inc. Junior Dairy Day Slated in Medford The annual' Junior Dairy Day sponsored by the Rogue River Jersey Cattle club will be held at the fairgrounds in Medford May 20. Starting time is 10 a.m. The one-day show is open to anyone under 21 years old. Plans call for a dairy 081116 judging contest,, followed by demonstrations and conclud ing with a dairy showman ship contest. Cliff Moore, Eagle Point, youth chairman of the Jersey Cattle club, will be in charge of the show. Additional in formation on the show can be obtained from . Moore, route 1, box 624, Eagle Point, or by contacting the county extension office. Gary Cooper's Condition Said To Be Worsening . Hollywood - (1JPD - There has been "a worsening" of the condition of ailing Gary Coop er, 50, his physician said Wed nesday in confirming the star was sufferisg from "advanced cancer," : .-, ; ... In a medical bulletin, Dr. Rex Kennamer said: "Gary Cooper is a victim of advanced cancer, In 1060 he underwent surgery for carci noma of the colon. "Several months ago, the malignancy was discovered at multiple sites throughout the body. In the past week there has been a worsening of his general condition and there is reason for grave concern. Spirit Said Good "With a full knowledge of his condition in the . past months,- Gary s spirit is good and his courage is a source of inspiration to bis family' and friends, "Aided by his family and religious advisors,. Gary con tinues to fight vigorously and unafraid. He has been greatly comforted by the interest, good wishes and blessings of his friends throughout the world." Dr. Kcnnamer's statement was the first official an nouncement that the actor is suffering from cancer. Cooper is being treated at his Bel-Air mansion and the doctor said, "Gary's present ' condition is not such- that daily medical bulletins will be issued. one a child to the store? Reported in County Eighteen cases of measles were reported in JacKson county last week, according to the county health depart ment. Eleven of the cases were In Medford; three each In Ashland and Central Point; and one, Shady Cove. Other communicable dis eases reported were mumps, 3 in White City, 2 in Ashland, 4 each In Central Point and Shady Cove, 6 Medford, 4 Eagle Point, and 1 Jackson ville; chicken pox. 2 in Eagle Point and 7 in Rogue River; influenza, 13 in Medford Ashland, 6 Shady Cove, and 1 in Eagle Point; and German measles, 1 in Central Point and 5 in Medford. Two cases ' of whooping cough were reported in Med ford; two ringworm in Ash land; 1 pneumonia, Central Point; 2 gonorrhea, Medford,' and 2 -Infectious mononucleo- sis, Medford.
