MEDFORD :iAi. Tni.j..t, l-.i .iOiiD. OREGON Vf.ii-iAY, APHIL 26, 19S1 Anti-Castro Invader Gives Eyewitness Account of Military Operations in Cuba Editor's note! ni rintuni.nn. from a merchant ship in the Gulf of Mexico, a survivor of last week's anti-Castro landing today gave the first oyewitness account of the military operations. He and four other rebel fighters had suc ceded in escaping the beachhead aboard a raft and a passing ship picked them up Monday. United Press International established radio contact with the ship this morning and obtained the follow ing account of the invasion. The story (dictated In Spanish and translated into English) is told by a 3fi-year-old Cuban who served as Fidel Castro's former Judge advocate during the Sierra Mae stra battle against Batista. He turned against Castro a month after Castro assumed power in Ha vana and early this year Joined the clandestine anti-Castro army. By MANUEL PENABAZ As Told to UPI Copyright 1961 by UPI ' 1 am one of the lucky few who got out of Cuba after last week's disastrous invasion. I was there three days. It was( the MIG jet fighters, the So viet tanks and the mortars which defeated us. The Cochinos Bay landing will be in Cuba history what Dunkirk, was to the British. Except that we had nobody to get us off the beach. About 1,500 men took part in the invasion. Apparently only a handful managed to get away alive. There were 350 men in pur group. We hit the beach from a Liberty ship at 3 a.m. April 17. Four companions and my self evidently are the only survivors - not captured or dead - of our 350 who went in. . After three days of fighting we decided to try to get out. By some kind of miracle we stumbled on a rubber life raft on the beach. Suddenly we were discover- Riddle Plant Part Of Major New Field In Marketing Nickel Riddle, Ore. The Hanna Mining company has entered a major new field, the com mercial production and mark eting of nickel, it was an nounced today. The company has completed acquisition of a smelter that processes ore from the Riddle mine, the nation's only large nickel deposit, and has begun marketing high grade "f erro nickel for use in the produc tion of stainless and other alloy steels. , ' Through a subsidiary, The Hanna Nickel Smelting com pany, Hanna Mining has op erated a plant here since it was opened in 1955. To(date it has produced more than 100 pounds of nickel, all of which has been for the ac count of the government to help build the defense ma terials inventory of the stra tegic material. f High Quality Nickel W. A. Marting, president, said that the company's ex perience has shown it can pro duce a nickel of dependable high quality at a competitive price. He said the company has sales agreements with major alloy steel producers in the country; "We are confident that the v.V.V.V.V.W.W V.V. issfVHPsBssss V.V.V. Hanna Mining for many years has been a supplier of raw . material to the steel in dustry. It is one of the world's large independent producers of iron ore, with holdings in Minnesota, Michigan and Mis souri. It has. a substantial in terest in Iron Ore Company of Canada, which can produce more than 12 million tons of ore annually from the Quebec Labrador fields, -and is cur rently investigating a large commercial development of extremely high grade Bra zilian iron ore. Interest In Vessels It also has interests in ore vessels in the Great Lakes trade, in the St. Lawrence Seaway and on saltwater. With Dutch associates, it recently built a large, fast ore unload ing and storage dock in Rot terdam to serve the steel in dustry of western Europe. The company will distribute the nickel to steel companies and foundries across the coun try from warehouse stocks in Chicago, Detroit, Pittsburgh and Riddle. The distribution system is set up to provide prompt service on less-than-carload lots. -.. The nickel smelter installed here was the first to use the Ugine process to produce nickel. The process, develop ed in . France for refining chrome and adapted by Hanna Mining for nickel smelting, in volves the use of electric fur naces, with impurities remov ed from the molten metal in a series of ladles. Aerial Tramway Used Crude ore, containing about 1.5 per cent nickel, comes from the deposit here held for many years by Hanna Min ing. It is moved to the plant over a 1-mile aerial tramway. Total employment at the plant and mine approximates 450. Nickel and chrominum are the two key alloying metals used in stainless steel. Last year approximately 85 million pounds of nickel were used in the United States for this purpose. The plant at Riddle produced more than 22 mil lion pounds of nickel in 1960. LAWFORDS EXPECTING Hollywood - (UPI) - English born actor Peter Lawford and his wife, Pat, sister of Presi dent Kennedy, expect their fourth child in June. Their other children are Christo pher, 6, Sydney, 5, and Vic toria Francis, 2. ed and Castro's men opened up with 50 -caliber machine guns, but they missed us. That was in the early morn ing hours of Thursday. We paddled out to sea and were about 100 miles south of Cuba when the freighter Louise picked .us up last Monday -exactly a week after the be ginning of the invasion. Shortly after we had land ed Castro's forces let go with everything they had - jets, Russian tanks and mortars. Aboard Six Ships Our 1,500-man invading force was aboard six ships. We sailed from a friendly Latin American country six days before. The first bit of Cuba we sighted was Cayo Guano (Key Guano). About an hour later we saw the lights of Playa Largo (Long Beach), our destination. The first batch of men land ed at 0300. The operation was very slow and the men were still landing at 0900, six hours later. This apparently gave Castro's men time to gather their forces and move in re inforcements. During the landing we were subjected to all-out attack. But we kept landing. Ammunition Lost They sank two of our ships. They were the ones loaded with ammunition for our tanks and guns. My group managed to at tain its preViously determined position. We held it as long as we could shoot. We took two prisoners. They were both wounded and we took them to our field hospital where our own men were being treated. We held our position for three days, without eating and with a minimum of water. Here and there somebody had half a canteen, or maybe just a cupful. Failure Obvious After three days of fighting, it was obvious ,that our in vasion had failed. Our com mander, San Roman, gave the order to evacuate the areas. They were words we never ex pected to hear. "Salvese quien Pueda!" he shouted. (Every man for him self). I shall never forget them. Souvanna, a self,-exiled neu tralist leader who is recog nized as legal premier by the Communists, issued a state ment in Hanoi, Communist North Viet Nam, accepting the cease fire agreement arranged by Britain and the Soviet Union. The ex-premier said that to bring about an effective peace in Laos it was essential "to en large the government and transform it into a provisional coalition government with the participation of various par ties." . ... . ; Delegations Invited Souvanna said he had in vited the representatives of the Communist Neo Lao Hak sat party, political arm of the Pathet Lao movement, and the "Savannakhet group"-the royal Loation government in Laos - to send delegations to Xieng Khouang in northern Laos on Friday to discuss his proposals. The Vientiane government did not respond immediately to Souvanna's demands. But first indications were they would be difficult for the pro- Western government of Pre' mier Prince Boun Oum to ac cept. We had five fine tanks, but they were use less after the ships carrying the ammunition for them were sunk. : Those same ships carried anti-tank mines we had hoped to use against Castro's tanks. . We all wore camouflage uniforms and carried Ml car bines or machine guns. Not in U.S. Territory There is one point I would like to emphasize. We were never in U.S. ter ritory prior to the invasion. We left the friendly Latin American country which was our debarkation point about 10:30 p.m. one night six days before the landing. I'm glad I got out, of course. But like all Cubans who hate Castro and do not want to see their homeland turned into a Communist satellite. I am ter ribly sad that we failed. It was a lesson that we shall not forget, however. Committee Tackles College Aid Bill Washington-IUPD-The House Education and Labor commit tee today was expected to re sume work on President Ken nedy's college building and scholarship bill, the less con troversial of his two art school aid program. The committee met on the $2.4 billion bill last week, but made little headway. The five-year p r o gr a m would make $1.5 billion in loans and grants to colleges for building classrooms, li braries and laboratories, and $900 million for more than I 215,000 four-year college sch olarships. The other part of the pro gram, a $2.3 billion proposal to aid public grade and high schools, made progress in an education subcommittee Tues day. The subcommittee ten tatively approved a ban on federal control of schools and a "declaration of purpose" embodying nearly all the prin ciples of Kennedy's request. Night auditor Warren Ed wards said a man who appear ed very nervous entered the office about 12:20 a.m. and handed him a printed note. FARMING STATE Des Moines - Iowa has a larger proportion of area in farmed land than any other state. Depressed Areas Bill Faces Hurdle Washington-IUPD - President Kennedy's $394 million pro gram for re-vitalizing econom ically depressed communities today faced its last, and prob ably its toughest, congression al hurdle. Administration forces wore confident the House would ap prove the measure and 'send it on to the White House by mid-afternoon despite new op position engendered by a dis pute over its "back door fi nancing." But Chairman John W. Byrnes of the GOP Policy committee foresaw a "close vote." The committee Tuesday afternoon agreed to fight House passage of the measure in an effort to force elimina tion of the disputed financing provision. The so-called "back door financing" would permit fed eral outlays of $300 million without requiring the admin istration to get the funds ap propriated by Congress, as is customary for such programs.
