M i Five Valley Firms Presented Progress Awards by Chamber Five Medford and Rogue ' valley firms received progress awards from the . Medford Chamber of Commerce at : Monday's roundtable luncheon in the Jackson hotel. The awards were presented by Ken Cook, manager of the Medford branch of United Air : Lines, who serves at the cham ber's progress awards commit tee chairman. The awards : were presented both to 'new valley firms, and , to firms which have recently remodel ed. -' Receiving the awards were the Dumas Domestic laundry, 30 North. Riverside ve.; the Thunderbird Market on West . Main st.; the Tnunderblrd Lodge on South Riverside ave.; the Orange Co-op of Cen tral Point; and Bill Brooks, Medford, a general contractor, Murray Dumas received the award on behalf of Dumas Domestic laundry.. The laun dry recently rebuilt and ex r ided following a fire which t most .completely destroyed t plant last year, Dumas said 1 1 laundry had Intended to "i anyway, but the fir "expedited our plans." - - Accepts Award- ...; John R. Hatfield, office manager, accepted the 'Thun derbird market' award. He said the firm decided to build in Medford because it is the fast est growing city in Oregon. Further expansion of the mar ket is planned, he said, if busi ness warrants It. ; D. H. (Bud) van de Sande Jr. accepted the progress award for the Thunderbird lodge. He cited three main reasons for the lodge building in Medford: a good location was made available; Medford is growing; and Medford is a natural stop-over point. Paul' J. Molloy, assistant manager, received the award for the Grange Co-op . and noted that the cooperative has invested $280 thousand in the valley during the past three years. He thanked the cham ber for the award, and said he feels it Is important that the chamber "should recog nize the vital Importance of the farm business to a city such as Medford." , . The fifth award was given to Brooks because of the Mall building on East Main st., which he recently built, and because of a hew convalescent hospital and cooper ative apartment development which he plans to build near the. shopping center In the near future. - Fluoridation Receives Boost .; Chicago - The new surgeon general of the Public Health Service has affirmed his agen cy's continuing support of wa ter fluoridation. i Dr. Luther L; Terry de clared, "I cannot emphasize too strongly the importance of fluoridation as a means of im proving the dental health of children." . He further urged every com munity without the protec tion of a fluoridated water supply to "adopt this safe and effective public health meas ure for the reduction cf den tal decay." The surgeon general said that fluoridation's effective ness in preventing two out of every three dental cavities has been "amply demonstrat Dr. Terry cited endorse ments of the measure by the nation's leading health and scientific groups, Including American Medical association and American Dental association. The Public Health Service went on record as supporting fluoridation in 1B50 and has been one of its strongest pro ponents during the succeed ing years, UDALL TO SPEAK V Salem - lUPD ;-Interior Sec retary Stewart Udall will be main speaker at a Democratic fund raising banquet in Port land in June. Exact date has not been set. Ashland Student Named Honorary Merit Scholar Evanston, 111. - (UPD - Eight students from Oregon were among nearly 1,000 from throughout the nation to be named as winners of four- year merit scholarships to col leges of their choice. In addition an Oregon stu dent was among 140 named nonorary merit scholars in recognition of high achieve ment. The 140 will not receive financial assistance from the merit program. Year-Long Competition xne , awards climaxed a year - long, nationwide aca demlc competition in the na tion s schools. About 330 stu dents received merit scholar ships sponsored by more than an business corporations and foundations, professional as, sociations and individuals. Also, about 400 merit scholars received scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship corp., wnicn conducts the an nual competition. , Those from Oregon, : their schools arid colleges they have picked include:- Robert F. Kreisman, Ashland, Stanford, physics. , Ashlander Sentenced To Three Day Term Ashland - (UPD - Edward Al lan Rente, 52, of 576 Indiana st., Ashland, pleaded guilty. to charges of petty theft in Ashland municipal court yes terday and was fined $25 and sentenced to three days 'in Jail. ; Renie was arrested April 19 at the request of an Ashland grocery store.
