Portland in Race For Major Team . - Fortland-IUPD - Bill Sayles, general manager of the Port land Pacific Coast league base ball team, said Monday Port land was in a "tight race" with Seattle for the first ma jor league franchise for the Pacific Northwest. Salycs told the Chamber of Commerce major, league base ball would draw one million paid admissions here. He said he based his estimate on ex perience of San Francisco and Los Angeles which formerly! belonged to the PCL and then joined the major leagues. Representatives of the 14 clubs, here for the spring con vention of the league, want no part of the ruckus involving Marshall and the new stadium in the nation's capital. "That's his problem," was the consensus. Pete Rozelle, commissioner of the NFL, said he would not take part in the trouble. ' "That's strictly a club prob lem and the league office is Basilio To Retire From Ring Syracuse, N.Y.-flJPD-Carmen Basilio, one of the most dedi cated and courageous men ever to lace on a pair of box ing gloves, has decided to hang 'em up. Barring an unlikely change of mind, the .34-year-old for mer middleweight and wel terweight champion from Chittenango, N.Y., made the anticipated announcement of ficially today with a terse ex planation to sports editor Billy Reddy of the Syracuse Post Standard. "I decided to retire," ' Ba silio told Reddy. "I've always made my own decisions and this is mine. It's not an easy decision but it is getting hard er to keep going at 34 years old." Basilio, smiling through the lumps and cuts he absorbed during a 15-round loss to N.Y. Mass. - Europe middleweight champion Paul Pender Satur day night, added: "Against Pender, I just ran out of gas." Basilio said he had several job offers but "will rest and think things over for about a week" before deciding which to accept. - - not concerned with it," said Rozelle. "It's something that Mr. Marshall will have to work out.". Officials in W a s h i n gtori ton have told Marshall that he should hire Negro players-or face the possibility of being barred from the new stadium being constructed there. Today the general managers of the 14 clubs met to discuss ways and means of increasing the steadily zooming NFL at tendance. Rozelle reported a survey of the clubs indicated attend ance in the league would be up again in 1961. "Advance season ticket sales indicated we'll have more than 70,000 season tick ets sold this year than we had last," said Rozelle. GymkE On--Sunday Siskiyou Sports Car club will be host for a eymkhana on Sunday, April 3D. The event will be at the Medford armory parking lot with registration cE cars and drivers starting at 9 a.m. First car will go out at 10 a.m. .Registration will cfose at halftime when e?.ch of the cars has run through the course once. Welcome Extended The event is open to all per sons with sports or imported cars. Spectators also will be welcomed by club members. The club also extends a wel come to prospective members and guests to attend ' meets the first and third Fridays of each month at Radio station KMED. Meetings start at 8 p.m. Members, in addition to con ducting their own activities, tour to neighboring clubs to take part in competition. A Siskiyou member, Evelyn Spears, won the powder puff event on Sunday, April 16, in a meet at Roseburg. Eight cars from SSCC made the trek to Rosebur. .
