In fact, your ability to solve very difficult reason ing problems may not be dam aged as much as your ability to walk a straight line or to . drive your automobile. This conclusion, based on experiments conducted under grant from the U.S. public health service, was reported to the meeting of the Eastern Psychological association here by Drs. John A. Carpenter Omar K. Moore and Edith S. Lisansky, all of Yale univers ity, and Dr. Charles R. Syn der, now at Southern Illinois university. In the Yale experiment the men taking part drank various amounts of 90-proof whisky mixed with soda. The liquor was consumed on an empty stomach and all within 15 minutes. Then they were re quired to solve difficult prob lems in the calculus of pro positions. Not until the dosage of alcohol reached one millillter of abosolute alcohol per kilo gram of body weight did the drinking have any adverse ef fect on problem-solving abil ity. This is equivalent to six ounces of pure 90-proof whis ky for a man weighing' 180 ' pounds. ' Actual Improvement At some of the smallest doses of alcohol there was ' actual improvement in solving the difficult intellec tual task. ' No one yet knows how al cohol affects the solving of simpler problems or reason ing that is even more diffi cult.' - - :' Very little scientific work has been done on the effect of alcohol on various kinds of intellectual tasks and much of what is generally believed is really in error, Dr. Carpen ter told Science Service. Re search in this field is badly needed, he said. It is widely believed, for example, that alcohol is re laxing; It Is often prescribed by physicians to relax tense, keyed-up patients. These in vestigators found no evidence to indicate that alcohol ac tually has a relaxing effect. What they did find was that I alcohol is probably more dam aging to motor and sensory abilities than to the higher" thought processes. Only l l Third of Congress Chaplains Have Been Methodists Washingto n -WPD - In choos ing chaplains for the House and Senate, Congress for more than a century has displayed a marked favoritism toward' the Methodist church. ,. That is the conclusion reached by a Baptist editor, James Duncan, who made a survey of the denominations represented by the chaplains who have opened congres sional sessions with prayer. Of .108 ministers who have held the office, Duncan found, 36, or exactly one-third, have been Methodists. . There have been 28 Presby terian chaplains, 19 Episco palians, 14 Baptists, 4 Unitar ians, 3 Congregationalists. Two of the nation's largest religious groups -the Roman Catholics and the Lutherans have had ' one chaplain each. The Catholic chaplain served for a single year, 129 years ago.- ' Although Baptists had a number of chaplains serving Congress in the early days of the republic, their last repre sentative was chosen more than a century ago, In 1843. Lone Lutheran - ' The lone Lutheran served in the Senate in 1886. , The Disciples of Christ and the Universalists also have had one chaplain each. Other denominations have never had a congressional chaplain. Duncan's survey, published in The Capital Baptist, also shows that there has been' great irregularity in the length of the terms served by House 'and Senate chaplains. The all-time record is held by the Rev. James Shera Montgomery, Methodist, who served for 29 years. Duncan suggested that Con gress take steps to "guaran tee more equity in the selec tion of chaplains" by rotating the office among denomina tions, with each chaplain serv ing a fixed term of perhaps two years. , , - SHAKE ONE'S FAITH New York - (UPD - The Long Island Rail Road reported to day that Its rainy day idea has gone down the drain. The commuter line,- which a year ago put out 665 umbrellas for its riders to use and return on days they forgot their own bumbershoots, said that only 80 were left. The others were nM returned. A. I-
