' ' (UPI telephoto) Back Stairs: Commercial Sponsorship By MERRIMAN SMITH UPI While House Reporter Washington-flJPD-Back stairs at the White House: , There's one -wonderful as pect of the Kennedy adminis tration. Most anyone can par ticipate in it. Or try to. . Witness the- thousands of letters that poured into Wash ington from the general pub lic, telling how President Ken nedy's . news conferences should be conducted. This was after the conferences first ap peared on live television, and the public got its initial view of reporters having the temer ity to ask the Chief Execu tive questions. . ' Now there's another flap producing much mail and heated controversy'. It has to do with the President's ap pearance last week in a tele vision documentary. NBC's "J.F.K. No. 2" which was sponsored commercially by a toothpaste. Public Less Disturbed . . With no attempt at a scien tific survey, but judging from the mail and comments in the newspapers,, the public seems less disturbed by the commer cial aspects of Kennedy's ap pearance than some promi nent Washingtonians, includ ing members of Congress and the cabinet: '" ' ' ' ' . ' What some of Kennedy's dignified and would-be pro tectors might not know is that the President, himself, knew full well before, he. taped the hour-lone show; Lnuch of it at his office desk,, that' it would appear on . the . air un- Average Governor -Is 49-Years-Old Chicago - (UPD - The.average age of state governors is 49. The average governor is mar ried and has . two or more children, according to the Council of State Governments. The Council's survey noted that almost two-thirds of the 50 governors were born in the state they now govern, that 32 are attorneys, and that other occupations i n c 1 u d e farming, banking, teaching and publishing. Almost all the governors are church members and more than half of them' served in World War II. ' TO INCREASE AID Washington - (UPD - The Uni ted States has announced it is establishing a military ad visory group in Laos and in creasing arms aid to the royal Lao forces, Salem -. (UPD - Firemen in Oregon have won- a 56-hour work week in the Oregon House. The bill passed 32-25 and went to the Senate. Their present minimum is 72 hours a week der commercial sponsorship. - And' it Is equally true that when the President decided to use : television as one of his primary avenues of communi cation with . the public, he was thoroughly aware that American- television depends on commercial sponsors for existence just as newspapers and magazines are supported by printed advertising. : 1 - No Share of Money ; On the recent TV outing, the President .derived no share of the sponsor's money, Commercial sponsorship of TV shows built around the chief executive probably will continue, too. It gives him a chance to - reach the public during the highly expensive, so-called prime hours between 8 and 11 p.m. These are the hours when television makes its big money and only when the White House formerly re quests time for a presidential speech of top importance do the networks present unspon- sored shows during this prime period. Currently j there doesn't seem to be much of a question about sponsoring , the , presi' dential news conferences. The networks present these as a public service and much more often than not,, at an hour that does not compete with or blot out a top-rated and '. lucrative i commercial show. The giant lets, mainstay of America's nuclear retaliatory forces, have had more acci dents and crew fatalities in the past three months than in all I960. In the recent traeic - acci dent in New Mexico, the B52 was. an innocent victim of an errant sidewinder missile re leased in some manner Mil unexplained from an F100 jet fighter. The two planes were involved in a practice com bat mission. Three of the B52's eight crew members were reported dead. . i. Members said the Senate Preparedness sub committee have asked the Air Force for a full report on the incident to be made available to all members of the parent Senate Armed Services committee. The Preparedness subcommit tee would be the panel to con duct a follow-up inquiry If any is necessary. Stark Warning ' . Chairman John C. Stennls (D-Miss.) of the Preparedness subcommittee, said the acci dent is a "stark warning that we simply must.be on the alert for such mishaps." He said the incident illustrates how "missile war could be sparked by accident, miscal culation or surprise." In four previous maior ac cidents since mid-January in aerial . refueling and other training exercises, 14 B52 crewmen have died. Last year, when it had the highest safety mark among Air Force -aircraft, the B52 had four major accidents and suffered eight crew fatalities. One 'accident was on takeoff and another on the ground All this year's have been in in flight. A major' accident is one in which the plane is de stroyed or has to have a ma jor component, such as land ing gear or wing section, re placed. Common Caul , Sought One of the first objectives of safety investigators is to learn whether in Bj series of accidents there is some com-i mon cause indicating a basic problem in 'the airplane in volved. . ' i . The, Strategic Air Com mand told a UPI reporter such did not appear to be the situation with the B52. The Command has "imme with the B52 crashes and has stepped up "every investiga tive and supervisory action to determine if there are any common factors inherent in all of these." "To date this does not ap pear to be the case," SAC said. findings will be sent through' out the Command immedi ately for the benefit of main tenance and flight personnel. Where necessary, there will be training changes. , The B52's major accident rate last, year was 1.5 per 100,000 flying' hours, com- Sander Elected Moose Governor I Carlos Sander was elected governor, ' of the Medford Moose lodge in the annual election of officers at Med ford Moose hall recently.
