SECTION C PAGES 1 to 10 Medfowv5&s&Tribuni Medlord, Ore, Thun, April 20, 1961 Resolution Asks Investigation of Birch Society Washington-flJPD-Rep. Edgar W. Hiestand (R-Calif.) has in troduced a resolution to cre ate a special House commit tee to investigate the John Birch Society and what he called a "smear campaign" against it. Hiestand, is one of two House members who have identified themselves as mem bers of the ultra-conservative group. He cited as evidence of the alleged smear the Army's action in relieving a general who was -secured of using the society's mate -1 in : an indoctrination course for bis troops. Since when is it procedure to relieve a military officer of his command for distribu ting the information of a pa triotic society?" he demanded In remarks prepared for the House. "Since when is it wrong to advance the cause of Americanism?" ' .... Special Committer : Hiestand's resolution, If ap proved by the House, would create a special seven-member committee to Investigate the society. He said the so ciety's founder, Robert Welch, has asked for an investiga tion and that-he himself, as a society member, would wel come it. . "It appears the only way to ferret out the facts from ,the maze of distorted claims, he said. " ' The Army earlier this week relieved Maj. Gen. Edwin A. Walker of his command of the 24th Infantry Division in Germany pending - investiga tion of reports that he circu lated John Birch Society ma terials and also that he criti cized some public figures as leftist. . ' "Undoubtedly this move was made as a result of vic ious attacks on the society here in this country," Hie stand said. He cited the Army action as evidence, of ."how far this deplorable -smear campaign is advancing." Benson, of Pennsylvania State university told scientists at the annual meeting of the Federation of American Societies for Exper imental Biology that a sub stance resembling a common household detergent may hold .the key to how sulfur is used in photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the pro cess by which the green leaves of plants remove carbon diox ide from the air and convert it to growth material and to free oxygen. The entire animal world depends on this process for the continuation of life, for the production of all the food we eat and the oxygen in the air we breathe. ic.. lmncr three vears. we - refused to believe that a plant could produce this Kino, oi ,,r,ri " nr Benson said. tUlUtluuiiu, " "But experimental evidence mounted ana recently . yu. -toio nt trio sulfur com- -pound have been isolated from alfalfa ana spinacn i" extracts." f CiiHAtunflr , Dr. Benson said the com pound a sulfonic acia ae rivative called a sulfosugar was found In the portion of laQf whlrh rnntains chloro phyll, the material that some how converts the energy of sunlight into biochemical en ergy. rworrpnf molecules .con sist of two functional parts: one end that is soluble in wa ter, the other end soluble in I1 Tha filaangintf firtion HeS Mil. i"w in the solubility of grease in the oil portion, Dom oi wmcn are carried away by the flow of water.
