Pitchers Bill Short and Fred Kipp and outfielder Jim Pi soni supplied all that was needed Tuesday night when the Virginians opened their season with a 3-0 victory over the Rochester Red Wings Short and Kipp, who came jon in the ninth inning, com bined to limit the Red Wings to six hits and Pisoni ac counted for all Richmond's runs with a three-run homer in the first inning. , Short, Kipp and Pisoni are all former major leaguers who realize they're' only a tele phone call away from rejoin ing the present New York Yankees. J TV -T Departure Of Cagers Postponed New York-flJPD-A group of 31 United States men and women basketball players and officials, scheduled to leave on a three-week exhibition tour of Russia, will remain in New York for a "few days" at the request of the Soviet Basket ball federation. According to Dan Ferris, honorary secretary of the Amateur Athletic union, which is sponsoring the tour, the Soviet Basketball federa tion made the request for post ponement Tuesday through the Soviet embassy in Wash ington because of anti-American demonstrations in Mos cow. Ferris said the group had no other choice but to remain in New York until clearance for the tour is granted, which he said should be forthcoming within a few days. The American team, made up of 12 jnen and 12 women from the college and indus trial ranks and headed by All America Jerry Lucas of Ohio State, had been scheduled to play a three-week exhibition tour' of two games each in four. U.S.S.R. cities, beginning in Moscow this Saturday. Oth er stops included Kiev, Tiflis and Leningrad in Russia, and Estonia and Latvia. Horse show time will be 8 p.m. on Friday and Satur day, May 5 and 6. Show en tries must be in by May 2. They should be mailed to Ed Anderson .route 4, box 465, Medford, Hawkins said. Here for the event as per formance judge will be one of the outstanding judges and trainers in the world, Mary Harbison, North Sacramento, Calif. There will be trophies, rib bons and jackpot prizes to fifth place. The show is open to all interested persons. There will be eight' events, open cutting, rein class, Hack amore class, English pleasure, costume class, western pleas ure for ages 12 and under, western , pleasure for. ages 13-18 and team roping. ' Rein and Hackamore classes are reported unusual to this area. The horse show will be at the Jackson county fair grounds, adjacent to the Na- of 18,000 which booed Brown for several minutes when the decision was announced. Brown stopped Charnley in five rounds in their first title brawl in Houston in 1959 and was a 7-4 favorite for their re match. But this time, Joltin' Joe found Charnley a much stronger opponent. He hurt his right hand with a solid poke that opened a cut on the Englisman's nose in the fifth round and then had to weath er an all-out rally by Charn ley in the final three rounds. Charnley, who weighed a half pound more than Brown at 134'4, put up a courageous fight although he was both ered "quite a bit" by blood flowing from his damaged nose. As the battle neared its finish, Dave tried gamely for knockout and did stagger the champion twice in the 13th and 14th rounds. Entering the final round, the bout was even on the UPI scorecard. Charnley again went all-out in the 15th, but at the finish referee Tommy Little walked to the Yank's corner and raised his hand in token of victory. Arthur Boggis, Charnley's manager, was extremely bit ter over the decision, "In any other country but England, Dave would have won the fight," Boggis said "By my reckoning, the last three rounds swayed the fight in Charnley's favor. It was Brown's 19th success ful defense of the title he won back in 1956 by outpointing Wallace (Bud) Smith at New Orleans. His end of the gross gate of $112,000 amounted to $50,400 while Churnley earn ed $28,000. MEDrWDvSwTRreUWl SIPODMTS Bowerman's Ducks Prep For Meet With Trojans Eugene - (UPB - Coach Bill B o w e r m a n's University of Oregon track and field team was preparing today for its big effort of the season against Southern California's Trojans at Palo Alto Saturday with a determination to win but with the facts of life against vic tory. Oregon will compete with the Trojans and Stanford in a three-way meet which also will be scored on a dual meet basis. The Webfoots were stung re cently by criticism of the school and athletic director Leo Harris in a Los Angeles talk by Jess Mortenson, the Southern California track coach. But whether this will be enough incentive to give the Webfoots the push they need was uncertain. Bowerman said: "We could win the meet with 68 points if we were hot as pistols and everything went wrong from the USC standpoint." But, he added, "It's more likely we'll end up with about 58-60 points based on what we should hon estly expect to do." Local track authorities give USC an edge. Oregon will be without pole vaulier Phil Paquin, who suf fered a pulled tendon against Oregon State last week.
