'l ' ' 6 B COOP FOR SITTING, TOO Rocking Chairs Making Comeback, Thanks To Use by President Kennedy Br DICK WEST Washington -IBM- The rock ing chair, most authorities agree, if one of the most ver satile pieces of furniture ever invented. . If you are spending an evening by the fire, and don't happen to have a hammer avail able, you can use u zor clicking, chestnuts. As something to stumble over In a dark room, it has no equal. And, if bad comes to worse, you can even sit in it. Despite those utilitarian virtues, the rocking chair, or "rocker" as it is commonly 4-1! NEWS Trail Blaieri ' President Karen Holley op ened the recent meeting of the General Point Trail Blazers 4-H club. Pene Flen ner led the flag salute and Vicki Caldwell led the 4-H . pledge. We also talked about our annual horse show in JunewRandy Headrick. Gary Whittle, Kar- en Holley and Carolyn Side tier were chosen for the com mittee to conduct the show, Vicki Caldwell and Carolyn Bidener gave a talk on the different breeds of light horses. Carolyn talked on the thoroughbred, quarter-horse and American saddler. Vicki reported on the Arabian, Standard bred and Morgan horses. We also work ed on filling out our record books. TODAY. mm mm MONDAY, APRIL 17, 1961 called, was until a few days ago well along the road to ward obsolescence. - Its place in modern house holds was rapidly being usur ped by the sling chair, which is the only practical method yet devised for bringing the discomforts bi the hammock indoors. Now. however, thanks t President Kennedy, rocking chairs are making a come back. The recent disclosure that he occasionally takes his ease In a rocker has made them fashionable again. v Time for Reiearch Well, sire, never let it t, said that a new sitting trenc caught me resting my haunch es on somebody's Chippen dale. Let it be said that I was out collecting Information on the subject. Here, then, based oh con sultation with the Smithson ian Institution and the Na tlonal Geographic Society, is my report on the origin and evolution of the rocking chair, Available records indicate that rockers were first at tached to chairs about 200 years ago. Some furniture historians believe the rocking chair was Invented by Ben jamin Franklin. Others think differently, At . any rate, it definitely was an American invention, Not even the Russians argue about that, If Franklin didn't invent the rocking chair, he at least improved the basic design. He rigged one so that the rocking motion would cause a fan to wave, and thus keep ines away. Invents Attachments Later on, another Inventor outdid Franklin. He hooked up a rocking chair so that it would "oscillate the cradle and vibrate at the same time the dasher of the churn." His purpose in that was to "employ the hitherto wasted female power." I assume that his wife must have scent a lot of time rocking when she should have been churning, Aaron Burr is said to have courted an Indian princess in two-seated rocking chair. I RHEE ENTERS HOSPITAL Honolulu (UPD Synaman Rhee, former president of the Republic of Korea, was ad mitted to Trlpler Army Hos pital tor surgical observation. it was announced Sunday. A nospitai spokesman said the 86-year-old veteran of i Ko rean politics has an abcess on his back, but his condi tion Is "not too serious." - UGAL NOTICES NOTICE TO CONCESSIONERS Sealed proposal!, for sales prlv- lieges AmiHram Kejiervmr Hf reatlon Area, Jackson County, Ore- ion, will be received by the Jack. spn County Court, at the Court HOUie Building.
