Brown is making his first title defense outside the Unit ed States against an opponent he stopped on cuts in five rounds, Dec. 2, 1959. Charn- ley claims he hurt Brown in their previous match and fig ures he has a good chance if the bout is close in his home territory. Basilio Pleases Brown has scored 39 knock outs during a pro career in which he has compiled an 82-18-10 record. Charnley stands 37-6-1 with 22 knockouts. A crowd of about 18,000 is ex pected at Earl's Court sta. dium. Basilio isn't ranked among the top 10 contenders but his appearance is likely to bring a capacity crowd into the Boston Garden. Although 34 and battle-worn to say the least, Basilio is a hard worker who never fails to please and has a wide following. Pender, under-rated when he first won the crown, is gaining popular ity, too. Pender is 30, four years younger than Basilio. The scheduled Joey Archer vs Willie Green Monday night St. Nicholas Arena local TV offering was -cancelled late Saturday night because of an injury to Green. It was re placed by Obdulio Nunez of New York by way of Puerto Rico, vs. Irish Babe Simmons of Westbury, N.Y., over 10 rounds. - Savage Archers Plan Tourney Savage Archers of Ashland will hold a novelty shoot on Sunday, April 23. The event will be on the club's range on Ashland Mine rd. and will begin at 9 a.m. All interested archers are invited. There will be an en try fee with the amount small er for children Ribbons will be awarded in all classes. A concession facility will be in operation. The Savage club also plans trail shoot on July 1 at Lake of the Woods. Targets will be life-size animals. Members have been working on the targets during the win ter months. A forest camp will be reserved for those who wish to spend two days. The lake resort also will take reservations. C. - (UPD "I needed a good win at home' and now I've got it," Mike Souchak said today of his vic tory in the Greater Greens boro Opp Golf tournament. Souchak, a former Duke university ace, finished with an eight under par 276 to top runner-up Sammy Snead by seven strokes and win first prize money of $3,200. Snead had won the Greater Greens boro seven times in the past. Bill Maxwell of Dallas, Tex., who fell to a 75 on the final round after starting the day only two strokes behind Souchak, was third with 284. Negro pro Charlie Sif- ford of Los Angeles, playing in his first southern PGA sponsored tournament, wound up in a tie for fourth place with Stan Leonard of Van couver, B. C.i at 285. Minnesota Viks Sign Three QBs Minneapolis St. Faul-(UP1)- The Minnesota Vikings today announced the signing of four rookie quarterback candidates as free agents. George Shaw, obtained from the New York Giants, is slat ed to be the Vikings' top quar terback, with Francis Tarken- ton, former Georgia star, his most likely alternate. Suggs Winner In Ladies Open Dallas, Tex.-fflPD Tourna ment-tested Louise Suggs still ruled as queen of the proette golf tour today as the femi nine professionals moved on to the next Texas stop the Babe Zaharias Open at Beau mont. Springfield Hailed As About Greatest Hershey, Pa.-flJPD - An of ficial of the American Hockey league today hailed the all conquring Springfield Indians as "just about the greatest team" in AHL history. "If they weren't the great est, then they were close to it," said Jim Ellery, the league's secretary - treasurer, who watched the Indians skate off with the Calder Cup championship for the second consecutive year by beating the Hershey Bears, 3-0, Sat urday night. The sports car goes to the man who bowls the high single game in team play. Senowski's 279 bettered by one pin the previous game, a 278 bowled by Paul Breudi gam of Cleveland on March 23.
