Although old fashioned ra diators and. registers do not . meet the demends of modern heating systems, pre-planning and guidance from a reliable -heating contractor can help resolve your needs at moder- -ate cost. Outmoded floor registers and protruding radiators are unsightly. They often prevent -you from laying new wall to ' wall carpeting. They create - problems in drapery and furn iture placement and in kitch ens when you want to install new cabinets or appliances. Problems Concentrated According to the Better Heating-Cooling council, it is not always necessary to -tear out the entire heating system to overcome these problems. Since problems are usually ' concentrated in, only one room; the trick therefore, is to concentrate ; on that one. For example, installing a new length of rduct from the heat- -- ing plant to a more suitable location in the room may do ' away with a floor register, t Old fashioned radiators ex- Screen Repairs Advice Given; Paint Suggested . Don't be caught with your screens down when the fly season begins. Check - them now ; to see whether the frames and mesh need repair ing and if any rust is to be removed. - ' Pajnt is the best protection against screen "rust. While : screens made of aluminum, , : brass or copper . will not rust away, Ihey do corrode. The . result is that rain creates an . ugly down wash from the met al which may stain the wood ' work or masonry below, caus--: ing an unnecessary paint job or some hard cleaning. " The easiest way to paint a ' screen is to lay it across a pair of saw horses, but two boxes the same height will do. Clean Off Screens r " ' Be sure to firstclean all soil from the screens by going over them with a cloth sat urated with turpentine or odorless paint thinner. If you are doing the job indoors,be ' sure to have adequate ventila- -Hon.. Remove rust from steel screening by carefully rub-. . bing with; steel wool. Prime any bare spots with a metal primer. The paint industry, which has a quality product for al most any purpose, has devel oped special screen enamels. These are thin high-gloss enamels which do- not clog . the mesh and Which give the . wire a strong, rust-resistant coating. These enamels can also be used for the frames. Galvanized steel screening requires its own special prim er.. This is known as metallic ' zinc paint or as zinc-dust-zinc oxide paint. If you don't like its silver gray color, this paint can be tinted to your taste with oil colors. Use Spar Varnish If you want to keep the ; original color of copper or brass screens, use spar var nish or any exterior varnish, . or exterior lacquer. - Aluminum screening and frames should be primed with zinc chromate and then be . - finished off with screen enam- : el. If you want to keep the gleam of the aluminum, do not prime, but instead. use a good exterior lacquer or a longer lasting spar varnish.- Screen enamels can be used : for the frames, but many people prefer to use the tough, color - fast trim - and - trellis enamels. Regular house paint can also be used on the frames providing the metal ones have been primed; -;.j-:'--iT..-.i -t.U tending 10 to 12 inches from the wall are easily replaced with convectors. These mod ern and efficient type radia tors can be recessed -in the walls and connected to the same piping used by the old radiators.. "." . ... New hydronic (hot water) heating systems that use fing-. er - size . flexible tubing . are easily Installed without mak ing major alterations in the house, the council says. Hy dronic tubing conveys heated ' water to modern baseboard heat distributors. : : Baseboard units are install-, ed at floor level against the "outside'.' walls which are ex posed to the weather. . These wall-huging units do hot in terfere with carpeting, drap ery or. furniture. Special rad iant baseboards can be install ed near the ceiling in small kitchens where base cabinets and appliances leave little or no space for heat distributors. ' jl . '. i ' Proper sizing and placing' of downspout conductor pipes . is essential to a correct roof drainage system.- - Downspouts should be lo cated at the ends or outside corners of roof gutters, the Roof Drainage Manufacturers Institute warns. Gutters should be sloped about one inch . in 16. feet toward a downspout to insure proper drainage. Gutter size depends on roof pitch and area to be drained. Style and slope of the gutters, number, location and size of conductor pipes also helps determine how big gutters must be. , Below Roof Outer edge of the gutter should be installed below the roof line extension to protect it from rain, snow and ice damage. Remember,! roof drainage problems can be avoided if you check your gutters and downspouts twice a year. Look for damaged areas; supports may be loose or gut ter edges slipping; etc. It's important to regularly clean out all leaves, branches and other debris that clog gutters and downspouts.
