. These terms
still baffle
the casual ob
server, and
even many
teachers, but
Dr. Leon P.
Mlnear says
they will be

The new state superintend
ent of public instruction says
the techniques have been
used elsewhere with success
and Orqgon has the benefit
of other states' experience.
They are part of his crash
program for Oregon educa
tion improvement announced
last month.
Team teaching," is so
new that even teachers are
asking what it's about.
Dr. Mlnear explains it as
when more than one teacher
is responsible for the same
group of children at a given
time. An example is when
a regular teacher is assisted
by a student teacher.
But a team might consist
of four or more teachers
One might specialize in sci
ence and math; another in
languages: a third in social
studies; and a fourth, i in
music.
They teach' in the same
classroom and work with the
same group of students,
sometimes 100 or more.
Team teaching was first
developed in the late 1950s.
About 100 school systems in
the nation . now use some
form.
"Ungraded classes" wipes
out all or part of the present
system of grading children,
allowing each child to pro
gress as rapidly as his abil
ities. This in turn leads to
variable grouping," putting
kids smarter in one subject in
one class segment and the
duller ones in another.
"Flexible scheduling" is us
ually found in high school
tertm teaching. , This means
classes that vary in time
spent each day and frequency
of classes during the week.
The accent could be placed
where school officials think
it is needed.
Although team teaching is
working out well elsewhere
and Dr. Minear wants . it
here-he feels it should not
be launched in a district
without one or two years ol
study and preparation.
This fits into his program
because it is an eight-year
plan.
Jaycee Flag Drive
Under Way in City
The Medford Junior Cham
ber of Commerce annual flag
drive is under way this month
to encourage downtown mer
chants to join the Jaycee flag
program.
Letters have been, mailed
to' over 190 Medford busi
nesses explaining the pro
gram, in which members of
the Jaycees post flags in front
of the stores on days when
flags should be displayed, and
removed them in the eve
nings.
The letter includes corre
spondence from John Pletsch,
manager of the Jackson Coun- .
tv Federal Savings and Loan
association, praising the flag
program and encouraging all
merchants to join.
