Medford Electric Rates Are Among State's Highest Electric power rates in Ore- con cities are among the low est in the nation, but the rates in Medford and other southern Oregon cities are among the Highest paid in this state. j The average bill for 250 . The session is spon sored by a $49,200 grant from the National Science founda v Qf the fifty junior high school teachers who will at- - tend the institute seven are , women and 43 are men. Eigh teen are from Oregon, seven from California, ' four . from Washington, three from New - York, two from Minnesota, and , there is one each from the states of Illinois,- Texas, Georgia, Col o r a d o, New Hampshire, Michigan, Iowa; Indiana, New Mexico,' Okla- .- Soma, Florida, Wisconsin, ; Ohio, Missouri, Utah and Mon tana. :-.:.' -' Dr. Holenbeck r e p o r t e d that many are bringing their f .nilies to spend the summer in Ashland and will attend : the Shakespearian festival. A - block of seats ' has been re served for institute : partici pants for each Monday , night of the festival beginning with the opening night. The.' entire institute is aimed at upgrad ing the teaching of science at those levels, , - A science teaching labora tory for the institute, is under construction in the basement f the library, and is to pro vide enrollees with the oppor tunity to construct much need ed science equipment for their iiivldual laboratories. This is com pared to the national average of $8.50 per 250 kilowatt hours. Only two states-Washington, and Tennessee - have lower average rates than Ore gon. - ' The highest rate paid in this state per 250 kilowatt hours is $6.98,. which is paid by rest-. I dents of Ontario and Nyssa, and other cities served by the Idaho Power company. The lowest, rates in' this state and in the entire nation, are in Eugene, where residents pay $3 per 250 kilowatt hours. Eu gene has a city-owned power system. :' " -Higher In Medford Residents of -Medford and other southern'' Oregon cities which are served by the Cali fornia Oregon ., Power . com pany pay $6.90' per 250 kilo watt hours of electricity, ac cording to the .report.'. These rates are second only, to those oi the Idaho Power company. Customers - of : . t h e city owned utility in: Ashland pay $6.60 per 250 kilowatt hours. The highest' average rate in the: United States is found in New Hampshire where cus tomers pay $8.94 per 250Jf.no watt hours. Customers in Washington pay $4.52; in Cali fornia they pay $6.85; and in Idaho they pay $8.44. : ' ' The report notes that prior to l947, .there was :a steady downward movement- in the level of rates for residential power; '''In 1947, howevery the rates stopped going down,. and a; slight upward movement started in 1951, and this move ment continues today. -'. ; . - -. j - 4 p - v t .
