Boat Patrol Will

.'.-' .' . '. . " ' X ' ' . I.' '
A boat natrol will start op

Jackson county, Sheriff Jos
Walsh said today, '
The Rogue Aqua Ski club
will be asked to assist, ho
said, ..-.--. ." ,
The patrol is now a roving
one, making spot checks at
all boating areas in the coun
ty. However, Walsh has asked
for $3,500 in the 1061-62
budget to cover marine equip
ment and to purchase a sec
ond boat. This would ba kept
at Emigrant lake where most
of the boating traffic Is ex
pected, he said. V
"We will have a patrol at
Howard Prairie lake when
general trout season opens
April 22," the sheriff an
nounced. , ' ;! '
"The ' public has always
been cooperative when we
Were there," Walsh said with
a grin. "But we have had
some trouble witV fishermen
moving directly in' front of
ski-boats," he added.
The sheriff said all safety
regulations will be enforced,
including carrying proper
st.fety equipment and obeying
the zoning restrictions. Zones
for fishing and skiing were
established last year for How
ard Prairie. - "
A new regulation , expected
for legislative approval is one
requiring a person to act as
lookout in each boat towing
a water-skier, or require a
rear-view mirror on the boat.
Walsh noted four serious
water-skiing accidents last
season in which skiers were
run over by boats towing
them. Main violations of the
state marine boating regula
tlons last season were reck
less operation of boats, Walsh
said. That law went into op
eration for the first time last
summer. k- s ..
Most of last season s boat
Ing law enforcement was con
centrated on the Rogue river
since Howard Prairie water
was low and Emigrant was
dry due to construction, the
sheriff said. .
