The CAB's long - awaited
decision will make United the
nation's biggest air carrier,
supplanting . American. A i r -lines
in terms of route miles,
aircraft, personnel and poten
tial passenger traffic. - i
Another 30 days must elapse
before the CAB's decision be
comes effective - 20 days in
which objecting airlines can
file petitions for reconsider
ation, plus another 10 days
for filing of rebuttals. But the
waiting period was a mere
formality because : the CAB
was not expected to change its
mind.. ' !
To Announce Plans V
, United President W. A. Pat
terson planned to announce in
Chicago Thursday the airline's
final ' arrangements for con
summating the merger of the
country's second and fifth
largest carriers.. : '.
The CAB decision joined
Capital's 7,500-mile route sys
tem iervlng nearly 60 cities
with United's 14,000-mile sys
tem going into 82 cities.
United is retaining only 41
of Capital's 56 jet-powered
Viscounts, . the - only modern
aircraft in the latter's fleet. It
hopes to sell Capital's DC3s
and DC4s and probably will
return to Pan American World
Airways the seven DC6Bs that
Pan-Am has leased to Capital
for nearly two years.
Will Use Jets ....
Eventually, United will dis
pose of all Viscounts when it
acquires short-range Caravelle
and Boeing 727 jetliners. It
will operate the prop-jets only
