The voters have consistent ly rejected proposed increases for legislators. Each legisla tor gets $50 a month, among the lowest in the nation. Appearing before the House committee on state and fed eral affairs, Sen. Vernon Cook (D-Troutdale) proposed anoth er ballot measure In 1962 that would repeal the constitution al restrictions on legislative pay and allow the legislature to set its' own salary, with restrictions. . ; Would Triple Salariei . Cook's proposal would be in the form of amendments to two House joint resolutions. Nos, .7 and 8. Number 7 triple legislative salaries and number 8 would - repeal the constitutional limitation. The twist that Cook sug gest! la that If the voters em- power the legislature to raise its own salary, that a specifi cation be included that this could be no more than $100 a month, ' . : .-' - .:- ' The 1963 legislature, how ever: could set the salary of the 1965 session,' 1965 could hike salaries for 1067, and so on. The theory is that if the people objected to a pay in crease proposed by a legisla ture, they could vote out of office the members who made the proposal.
