MEDFORD&jrRIBUNE SECTION B MEDFORD, OREGON, SUNDAY; APRIL 2, 1961 PAGES 1 to 10 Medford City Officials Neutral In Government's Building Plan Medford '' city officials are officially neutral in the fed eral government's decision to locate the new $2V4 million DR. CHARLIE BROWN , Aihland Optometrist Dr. Brown Opens Ashland Practice Ashland-Dr. Charlie Brown, optometrist, has announced the .opening of his office in the Professional Arts building, 450 Siskiyou blvd., Ashland. Dr. Brown, formerly asso ciated with Dr. R. A. Klever, North Bend, is a member of the First Methodist church, the International Association of Lions clubs, the Oregon and American Optometric associa tions, and Phi Theta Upsilon,' a national professional fra- ternity. . . - Born in Schaller, Iowa, the doctor has spent four years in the Armed Forces, and at tended both the University, of Iowa and Pacific university, Forest Grove, Ore. He holds bachelor of science and doctor of optometry degrees. Two Medford Boys Finalists in Event Two Medford High school students, Dale W. - Peterson and Roger W.-: Harris 'have been named among the 10 -finalists in the Oregon bcience Talent search, spon sored by the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry. ; Peterson worked . on "A Modified Borsch-Omori Seis mograph," and Harris' project involved abstract mathe. matics. ' , . . ,. Finalists will present their work orally before judges at the Science Youth Congress at OMSI on May 6 and 7 to determine the final winner. The projects were first entered last fall in the na tional Westinghouse Science Talent search, of which the Oregon Science Talent search I is a division. Peterson's proj ect received honorable mention in the national com petition, which was judged earlier. VIEW ART SHOW A s h 1 a n d Among those viewing the current graphic art show in the Southern Ore gon college Britt gallery was a group of senior art students from Phoenix High school who Visited the campus Thursday. Accompanying the group was their adviser, Miss Catherine Carter. federal building south of 10th St. I.'".;" v ' r : ''; But unofficially, they are disappointed. These officials were plug ging for the government to locate the building on a site in the proposed civic center near" the courthouse. But the government disregarded their wishes and picked the 10th st. site, between Central and Riverside aves. . f: City officials have "never been told the reason for the government's decision, and they are not at all sure the government, has a good rea son. Vy.-' ' :. h Think of Several Reasons On. the contrary, they can think of several reasons why the government s h o u 1 d n't have picked the site it did: . It will be inconvenient for the public. It will create traffic con gestion problems on Central and Riverside aves.' And, it will be taking valuable commercial property off the tax roles. This latter point receives added " emphasis when it is noted that the 10th St. site has also been picked as the location for the new .40-unit Imperial V400" motel.'A num ber of old buildings have al ready been razed and con struction of the motel is ex pected momentarily.; , ; Not Stop Government -S But this will hot stop, the federal government, Congress man Edwin R. Durno said in a speech, here earlier this week that the government will condemn : the property 'if jt has to., - This could involve court action and would cost the taxpayers dearly, as Dr. Durno himself pointed but. One city official- comment?' ed wryly that the government will probably wait until the new motel is built before it gets around to starting con demnation ' proceedings. . He added that with each passing day the process of acaulrinsr the property gets more and more expensive. The city council has never takei! a 'stand on the federal building; site, nor has it ever given approval - to. the pro- posea civic center idea. Backed by Commission This .idea is being backed by the city planning commis sion and it has been included in'; the city's proposed land- use plan.- The idea is based on a similar proposal made in the early 1930's. ' f The civic center would in clude all city, county,' state and federal office buildings in an 11-block site bounded by Holly St., Main st., Mistle toe St., and 10th st. It is felt that such an integrated ar rangement would be of con venience both to the public and to the respective govern ments. . When it was announced that the federal government was going to erect a new build ing here, the planning com mission gave tentative approv al to the civic center plan, in hopes that the government would pick a site there. Provide Information Every effort was made to provide the government with the necessary information about the site, and it was in spected along with several other areas of the city by a general services .administra tion site inspection team last year. ' y I ' :'V , ' K S . 4 ,-,t f,T It is rumored , around city hall that the: GSA actually favored the 'civic center site, but that they were overruled bv the nost office denartment. Following the dedication, there will be, a homecoming banquet honor ing Mrs. Earl Bigalow, the state president of the Legion Auxiliary. , . Hemingway got his start in Sanitarians Attend SOC Short Course . Corvallis - William R. Die riex, Orie Moore and George E. Runyan of the Jackson county health department completed the 13th annual sanitarians short course last week at Oregon State college. The three-day school is held each spring as an educational program for city,- county and state sanitarians and health department workers. Purpose of the school is to help work ers keep abreast- of new de velopments in the field of pub lic health. Sponsors are the state board of health and the Oregon State college department of civil engineering. Seventy five attended this year's radio in 1937 with station KBND in Bend, Ore. In Bend he improvised his radio news cast with an unusual dialect. The use of various dialects soon became the key to . his success, and the Hemingway style was born. - . . - s , In 1940, after a short stint with a Portland radio station,! he was called to Hollywood and has broadcast from there . ever' since.
