Collectivization Hears Completion In Red Hungary Vienna - (UPD - Hungary is twinging into the last lap of its drive for all-out collectiviza tion, official Hungarian sourc es in Vienna report. The campaign has been in full force since a Communist Party resolution last Novem ber ordered the completion of agricultural collectivization by the end of the winter. Party Chief Janos Kadar went on record at the last parliament session in December with a statement that it "would defi nitely be accomplished" be fore this current year is out. Under the force of these commitments, official pressure has increased on private land owners. No violence has been re ported, but officials are quick to use measures even more ei- fective against the stubborn but helpless hold-outs. Hungarian hospitality de mands that every visitor be offered coffee and cakes in the home. In a single day up to 25 regional officials descend on a peasant family, cleaning them out of coffee - which costs $9 a pound - offering in return tales of the wonders of socialized farming. More hard-necked peasants have been called out in their pajamas in the middle of the night, locked out and told to knock on the door when ready to sign up for collectivization. Drive Successful So far the drive has been successful. Between June and December last year, 223 new collective farms were organiz ed. An official tally at the first of the year said that 82 per cent of the arable land al ready belonged to the so-called Socialist sector. But the toll already is be ginning to tell. For all their propaganda successes, the offi cials cannot force the peasants to work the collectivized land. Unharvested potatoes still are lying in the frozen ground, and at night families dig up only enough for their own needs. Illegal slaughter of cat tle and swine is rampant, and Hungary, once the breadbas ket of Central Europe, last year was forced to Import pork for the first time in its history under an agreement with Austria which pledged Hungary to return payment in kind this year. It is improbable that the agreement can be kept. The peasants are slaughtering suckling pigs as well, and the market outlook for 1881 does not indicate enough meat for local consumption needs, let alone for export. Resentment High Travelers from Hungary re port that peasant resentment at the government has never been 'so high. Morale Is at a new low, and the official par ty organ, Nepszabadsag, re cently admitted that in sev eral villages demoralized peasants are drinking day and night. If the chance ever came again, western observers think the peasants would join with the intellectuals and workers who arose In 19S6 to over throw the hated regime. Ironically, some of the lead ers of the collectivization cam paign are said to have seen secret documents showing that the few remaining private farmers in Hungary are pro , ducing belter and bigger crops than the most advanced collec tivized farms in the "ideal state" - Russia, But resulting food shortage or no, and peasant opposition ' notwithstanding, the Kadar government is committed to Its course. Although Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev's friendliness to the Hungarian boss during the November Moscow conference vastly strengthened Kadar's position at home, failure to attain the promised 100 per cent collec tivization would mean failure of the regime's main plank, Ashland Boosters To Serve Dinner Ashland-The Ashland High School Band Booslcrs will serve a smorgasbord dinner April 8 at the Junior high school.
