I come from a larze fnmilv nina brothers and sisters. Automa tically, it seemed, we found ourselves together on holi days and birthdays and at leasi one Sunday a month. And "we" means our hus bands, wives, children. tiIhq whatever cousins and other relations tagged along. But it wasn't automatic Tt was my mother's doing. She aiea tour years ago, and since no one has her "family SDirit." we've nnlv hppn n. gether twice since then once lor a wedding and once alas, for a funeral. Truck Company's Scholarship Plan Opens in County A $500 Step to Knowledge scholarship program spon sored by the Oregon Nevada California Fast Freight, Inc Southern California Freight Lines has been opened to high school students who will grad uate from Jackson county schools in June, C. C. Proctor, sales representative of the company's Medford terminal, has announced. "The program is open to those graduating students in more than 65 cities through out Oregon, Nevada and Cal ifornia, and 26 students who will attend a college or uni versity next fall will be awarded $ 5 0 0 scholarship grants," Proctor said. Winning students will be selected by a judging commit tee comprised of local busi nessmen with Alf B. Mekvold, Jackson county school super intendent, as chairman. Applications are judged on a competitive basis. The de ciding factors in judging will be scholastic standing and achievement, extra curricular activities and educational apti tude. All applications must be submitted to the principal of the applicant's high school by May 10. The $500 grant will be made through ONC-SO. CAL's terminal in Medford, Proctor said. Detailed information about the scholarship grants is avail able at county high schools. Carroll J. Roush, owner and president of the company, said the company believes "that students desirous of attaining a higher education should be encouraged in every way, and that any aid from private en terprise in this direction is a sound investment in a pro gressive America." Peggy S I admit that our former comradeship and inti macy, as a family, was most ly due to Mom. But we don't have to drift apart and be come estranged, just because nobody cooks tons of food and insists upon rounding us all up to eat it! Nor do we have to wait for weddings, or dread funerals, as occasions for seeing each other. I don't agree with Nona that it takes somebody's hard work to keep a family to gether. I'll do my part if she and the others will do theirs. It's not a matter of food, or forcing, or a special occasion. Why can't we take turns hav ing a family "open house" with just coffee, cake, and conversation? The Council: One of the wonderful things about fami lies is that they can be to gether without getting to gether. Even without the ela borate gatherings-of-the-clan, described by these sisters, there is a mystic unity and telepathy. Thus, no matter how midely scattered, each feels a surge of gratification over a tidbid of pleasant fam ily news. In a crisis or emer gency, when a brother or sis ter is suffering a body blow, a pall settles fast, and the urge to rally and help is an elemental reflex. So, what Nona and Peggy are really lamenting is the end of the best-foot-forward parties which provided a sort of therapy and a demon strable "togetherness." We agree that it's snug and cush iony to find oneself in the bosom of one's kin. Usually, anything goes! As Peggy suggests, family gatherings can continue with no one going to more trouble than mailing a few postcards saying when and where. We have heard, for example, of Kissin' Kuzzin Klubs where the gang crowds into some one's 2'2-room apartment, or luxuriates on someone else's lawn. With children present, the refreshments are as simple as lemonade and cookies. No special reasons for con verging are needed. One fam ily s postcard said, "A n union in honor of Autumn, Another gathered around a brother's roaring hearth and ale shining red apples, while volunteecrs read poetry aloud. One of the most popu lar ways to share company among people who love each other is group-singing. Those Sing Along with Mitch at bums, containing copies of the words to hand out, can bind a group, however dispa rate and lackadaisical, into a unit, all contributing and par ticipating in the fun. Home talent, audience-participation these are personal (and in expensive) treats for family consumption. This family sounds like one that will gather at the drop of a hat, or a hint, from any relative with enough lemon ade. In Rev. Anton Boi- sen's remarkable book, The Exploration of the Inner World" (Harpers) he said that in a careful study of the sto ries of 173 insane men in a hospital he found only seven who had had any annoyance or strain or sorrow, such as could have tipped the man over. I have known many per sons with a tendency to de pression who got an attack of depression suddenly while they were on a happy vaca tion, and later did not get one when a much-loved son committed suicide. I remem ber a merry woman, a fine wife and mother who, one morning on a vacation, in a few minutes changed her whole personality, and be came so depressed she would not speak to her children. In these cases, one gains the im pression that some awfu, brain poison has suddenly been formed in the body. To day, chemists have found poi sons that, in a few minutes, will cause a person to act as If Insane, and henc it may be that some day soon a poi son will be found in the blood of some of the persons who are mentally upset. Such a poison has been found, in one laboratory, but as yet ex perts are not agreed about it, Lymphedema Many unhappy women, normal from the, waist up, ask me what to do for big legs and ankles. I assume they have a disease called lymphedema. I have seen cases in which two sisters had it, and hence it probably is based on an inborn defect in the tiny lymph channels which carry a slightly milky fluid through the tisswes. I have seen these women have some of their leg veins removed, but that didn't do any good because in these cases the trouble Is not in the veins. I cannot imagine any medi cine doing any good. Some men have tried cutting out and removing the swollen tis sue between the skin and the muscles and bones, but the able surgeons to whom I have talked about this were not happy about the operations that have been devised.
