6 A Good Friday Services Told For Medford and Vicinity ' The annual Good Friday service sponsored by the Med ford Ministerial association will be held Friday, March 81, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian church, Eighth and Holly sts. This one-hour service will be for both adults and senior high school students, it was announced. In previous years the service has been three hours in length and a separate service was held for the high school students. Two other services will be held from 1:40 to 2:25 p.m. for junior high school students. 1st Methodist Holy Week Events Include Concert , Holy Week services begin at First Methodist church with Dr. George G. Roseberry preaching on "Man On Re view" for the 9:30 and 11 a.m. services, Sermons, Music Told for Local Presbyterians I At the First Presbyterian church, Eighth and Holly sts., Sunday there will be music by the choirs under the direc tion of the Rev. Robert Jacks and Lynn Sjolund. At 9:30 a.m. the youth choir will sing "All In the April Evening" and at the second service the chancel choir will sing "Hosanna to the Son of Dayld." Paul Moore will sing solos for both morning services. : Additional new members will be welcomed at the sec ond service. Dr. D. K. West will speak on the theme, "Christ's Need of Us and Ours." : Junior High Fellowship will meet Sunday at 5 p.m. in the Youth chapel. Ninth Grade will provide the worship serv ice and will lead a program, "The Holy Wook" which will bo presented in the style of a radio broadcast. Refreshments will be provided by the Ninth Grade. The annual Lenten sacred concert by the chancel choir of First Methodist church will be presented Sunday at 7:30 p.m. Arranged by Mrs. C. R. Adamson, minister of music, the cantata is entitled "From Advent to Easter," and tells the life of Jeaus. The choir will be assisted by the congregation, using anthems, solos and hymns, with scripture narrative read by Dr. George Rose berry and the Rev. Robert Dowrey. Soloists include Miss Sharon Smith, Carroll Gra bor, Mrs. Gregory MacDou gall, and Ralph Van Horn, Portland. Mrs. Leslie Board man is the organist for the evening. Sacred Heart Catholic I Good Friday services sched uled in Medford at Sacred Heart Catholic church will in clude, in addition to scriptur al readings and prayers, the unveiling and adoration of the cross and the distribution of the holy communion which was consecrated on Holy Thursday. Special devotions will be held at 2 p.m. Friday for Ro man Catholic students attend ing the public schools. Following the Friday eve ning services the church will remain bare and unused for ceremony and no further services are scheduled until the Easter Vigil begins at 11 p.m. on Holy Saturday. St. Mark's Episcopal St. Mark's Episcopal church, Fifth St. and North Oakdale ave., will hold their three hour vigil from 12 noon to 3 p.m. Friday. The service is divided into segments so peo ple may come and go during the afternoon. Headrlck, Newberg, Ore., the speaker. Final Sermon in Series Set Sunday The Rev. Fred O. Sapp, Jr., pastor of the First Advent Christian church, will preach the final sermon in a three sermon series Sunday at 11 a,m. the Palm Sunday service will be entitled, "Remedy for Doubt." Young people up to tho age of 20 arc Invited to attend Sunday school. 1957 Award of Merit Winner Benediction of the Palms Scheduled at St. Mark's In accordance with ancient traditions of the Church, the benediction of the Palms will be held at the 8 a.m. Holy Eucharist at St. Mark's Episcopal church Sunday. The Palms, especially imported from the Holy Land for the purpose, will adorn the altar, be carried by the choir In procession. The remainder will be fashioned into small crosses by members of the Altar Guild, and be distributed to worshippers on Palm Sunday. According to traditional practice these crosses are retain ed until Ash Wednesday of the following year when they are burned at the start of another Lenten season. The Rev. George R. V. Bolster will preach at both the 9:30 and 11 a.m. services, with musical selections by the choir under the direction of John E. Drysdale. During Holy Week the Holy Communion will be cele brated twice daily, Monday through Thursday at 7 and 11 a.m. with the rector, the Rev. Theodore J. Ehrlich, the Rev. Eric O. Robathan, and Canon Edwin Moss leading medita tions on the Seven Last Words. This service will be so arranged that' worshippers may come and go at indicated intervals during the afternoon. Father Gabriel, who will conduct their conference pe riods, has had many years ex perience with young people as an educator at. Mt.f Angel Seminary as well as a Bene dictine missionary throughout the Northwest, The first conference of the retreat will begin at 9 a.m. in the activities room of St. Mary's High school. There will be a total of four confer ences during the day, inter spersed with periods for read ing and meditation, confes sions and prayers. , Participants are to take a sack lunch for noon-time eat ing in the school gymnasium. Pre-Easter Series To Conclude at First Nazarene "Characters About Calvary" is the subject of the messages by the Rev. Harold M. San- ner, pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene, 520 North Holly st., for Sunday's serv ices at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. This will conclude the series of pre-Easter messages. Music for the 11 a.m. serv ice will be provided by the male quartet and the sanctu ary choir will sing, "Jesus, Our Lord, We Adore Thee." Each of the departments of the Sunday school is in a pre Easter attendance drive con test with a "secret church." Last Sunday Medford First Nazarene took the lead. Prog ress of -the entire school in this effort is reported by each of the department supervisors at the closing session each Sunday morning. Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. the Men's Fellowship of the church will meet. The guest speaker is Fred Robinson, Medford city councilman and businessman.' Wednesday's service at 7:30 p.m., called the "Hour of Pow er," will be devoted to the Holy Week emphasis of the life of Christ. The general superintendents of the church with offices in Kansas City, Mo., have pro claimed three days of fasting and prayer on March 29, 30 and 31. The local First Church of the Nazarene will have its doors open for prayer each noon hour Wednesday through Friday, it was announced. Pre-Easter Services Scheduled in Talent Talent - Denver B. Head rick, Newberg, Ore., will hold pre-Easter services at the Tal ents Friends church beginning Wednesday; March 29 at 7:30 p.m. and continuing through Easter Sunday. Thursday Events Although a low mass, will be offered at 8 am. on Thurs day for the school children, adult parishioners have been asked to attend the Last Sup-; per celebration at 7:30 p.m. These services will end with the profession for the transfer of the Blessed Sacrament to the side altar and the rite of stripping the main altar, the latter' to recall how Christ was stripped of His garments. Adoration at the altar of repose will continue through the night and until the Friday evening devotions. The Very Rev. Carl Mai, pastor of Sa cred Heart church, encour ages all parishioners to spend some time in the church in meditation during these hours. Mass of Presanclified At 7:30 p.m. Friday the observance of the passion and Death of the Lord, commonly known as the Mass of the Pre sanctified, will take place. Assisting the parish priests in the Holy Week ceremonies will- be a Benedictine from Mt. Angel, St. Mary's Grade and High school altar boys and the high school Marian choir and boys' glee club. Confessions will be heard before and after all services and on Saturday from 1 to 5:30 and 7 to 10 p.m. Thirteen Persons To Join Zion Lutheran Thirteen persons will be received into membership at Zion Lutheran church, Fourth st. and Oakdale ave., during the' 11 a.m. worship service. The Palm Sunday sermon top ic by the Rev. H. C. Coovert will be "Action Becomes a Christian." The senior choir will sing "The Palms." ' A Maundy Thursday com munion service will be held March 30 at 7:30 p.m. jj Not of Any Value In Colossians 2:20-23 we find these words, "Where- fore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, (Touch not; taste not; handle not; Which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Which things have indeed a show of wisdom in will-worship and hu- mility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to Dennis Moil Minister there are things practiced in the religious realm which have originated in the ordinances, doctrines and com mandments of men. These things have a show of wis dom in will-worship, humility, and severity to the body but are of no real value in helping people overcome their fleshly appetites. As we read these verses we can not help but think of the present stress placed upon the observance of Lent and Easter. These are both seasons which originated in the doctrines and commandments of men for there is no mention of them in the Sacred Scriptures. They are seasons which have a show of wisdom, humility, and neglecting of the body. They are of no value however in promoting true righteous ness and holiness. During the season of Lent one is supposed to deny himself certain meats and other things of his own selection. As a rule people therefore engage in these things more than usual before Lent begins and return to them with just as creat a passion when it is over. As the apostle says, "They are of no value in checking the indulgence of the flesh." Many make their sojourn to church services and then return to their practice of staving awav from church services The stress placed upon such things is "not of anv value." In the New Testament Christians met every first day of the week to remember the Lord's death until He came. (Acts 20:7); (I Cor. 11:23-34). There was no importance attached to one first day of the week over any other. Churches of Christ do hot observe special days, months, times, or years (Galatians 4:9-11). Menzel, public relations and recruit ment director of Concordia college, Portland, will ba guest speaker Sunday at the 11 a.m. service at St. Peter's Lutheran church,, 1020 East Main st., according to itev. John E. Simon, pastor of the church. Mr. Menzel will be in the area accompanying the Con cordia college choir, which currently is on a concert tour in southern Oregon. During Holy Week services at St. Peter's church are scheduled for Maundy Thurs day and Good Friday at .7:30 p.m. The Thursday service is a communion service. Sunday Concert The 36-voice choir of Con cordia college, Portland, will give a concert at St. Peter's Lutheran church Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The choir, directed by Pro fessor George Weller,' will present a program of sacred choral music of the past three centuries. A free-will offering, to help pay for the cost of travel, will be taken.
